If you can work out a way of making a good seal between teh drum and cyclone this should not be a problem.

One way would be to fit a flange that pokes out 1.9" from the top of the drum and then use a clamp that wraps around the flange and the bottom of teh cyclone. A double "C" clamp with a foam rubber seal should be OK.

Btw, on dust collection, you guys are far ahead of anyone I’ve found here in the USA.

One reason for this is our woods are more toxic than yours so this provides a good incentive to get the dust sorted.

You should have a very short flexible hose that goes from the cyclone to the drum and from memory it is about 2" long, just long enough to lift the lid from a drum. Mine is about 2" and I have no real problem with getting the drum out and the lid hangs from the bottom of the cyclone still attached to the hose. I used floor waste as shown in this image



The hose clips provided should give an excellent seal as they are the bridge style made for the flexible line.

Yeah, last time I was in NSW (20 yrs ago) you had just had some really bad fires. It look like my Vietnam days after an air strike. Exploding trees? Really?

Anyway, I asked about this because on another forum a guy who worked with CV said 8” were recommended, I think to create a “dead zone” below the vortex of the cyclone so that the chips fall down rather than get sucked upward.

Link to comment? you are allowed to post links here unlike another forum. In general you will have no issues if you do not have air leaks below the cyclone and into the drum and the hose supplied with both 1800 & Max is 150mm.

Chris, I've looked back on the Clear Vue forum and cannot find that comment. It had to do with someone who was concerned about dust constantly circulating at the bottom of the cyclone and the connecting hose.

There was some speculation that the length of the hose between the cyclone and the drum could cause that effect but it was a long time ago and nothing came of it from memory.

It should not be as the cyclone is supplied with about 6" of flexible hose measured when stretched and only about 1" when compressed. I have never seen an installation where the hose was fully stretched. If you did experience any hassles it should be easy enough to bend the lid of the bin downwards providing it maintains its seal.

In summary, the concern was about the amount of dust constantly swirling about at the base of the cone just before the bin. As Chris noted, nothing conclusive came of the discussion.

This thread indicates that with a 9" connection the swirling action at the base of the cone remains.

The CV's, while being very powerful for their class, have the disadvantage of allowing you to see what is going on. Who knows what happens inside of opaque body cyclones? Who cares as long as the goal is achieved?

I have been following the CV forum for over 10 years. It seems that maybe the market in North America is maturing and growth is stagnate? Trade shows are a thing of the past except in a few select markets around Toronto and Vancouver. The concept of a "Shed" is unheard of. Woodworking in schools is slowly being phased out due to liability concerns.
