I tried running my shop vac without a vac bag once early on to save a bit of cash and mostly the inconvenience of having to buy a very specific item which is seldom stocked, but it failed miserably. The filter clogged within a few minutes and I could have easily put the vacuum hose up to my eyeball without fear of having my eye sucked out. Now I always use a vac bag inside and the filter remains pretty clean, certainly cleaner than my cars air filter.
When I started I ran a shop vac with just the filter. I was baffled by why the filter seemed to clog up so quickly and consulted the manual many times to try to puzzle it out. There was no mention of bags in the manual, and no bag was supplied with the machine. I only learnt about the bags when I was browsing around in Aldi a few years later - epiphany.
    Apologies for unnoticed autocomplete errors.

I’ve been using cloth bags over my pleated filter in the ShopVac since I bought it. They”re a cheap investment IMO.

I have a rectangle of foam rubber that has been stitched together along opposite edges to form a cylinder.

It just slips over the pleated filter, in lieu of a bag. When things get too cloggy, I slip it off shake it out, give it a rinse under the tap and pretty much throw it straight back on, all in a matter of a couple of minutes.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

These are the cloth filters I use.

Available from the green shed, or they were last time I bought them

There’s quite a lot of competition for that title.

I tested those orange cloth bags for flow back in 2016.
Flow loss using a Dust Deputy
Yes they do keep the Vac filter clean but they also rob 22% of the flow when they are clean and its all down hill from there as they have a smaller surface than my vac filter so I never put mine back.
I mainly use my vac to clean up the leaves and grass that blows into the shed from under the door and to collect metal swarf that gets flung off the lathe and mill onto the floor so I need max flow and am not worried about the filter getting blocked

Interesting. They made BA reduction in the air flow through my ShopVac. In fact, they save a heap of time when servicing the ShopVac.
