    Default WIP 1929 model A Ford Woody Wagon

    I took the toys and joys woody wagon patern and did some modification .I still would like to find a way to make my tires have a little bevel on them on the side all i can get is a flat side edge no matter if i put them in the wood leigh i need some kind of a chisel made like a gouge that would countour and make the tire look real .I tried to use a gouge but don't work ,if somebody can make me a tool for this i will be glad to buy it from you .They sell the wheels already made but i just like the fun of making my own .I thought of a rosette cuter but that dosen't have the same countour i can get the roundover on the edge of the top but the sides are always flat .I wonder what they use in China where they make wheels there's no way of finding out DSCN0103.jpgDSCN0104.jpgDSCN0112.jpgDSCN0113.jpg

    Are you talking of a slight bulge to the outer shape of the tyre. Could you do a drawing of what you mean, I am sure I understand but just to double check. I do most of my shaping on a lathe with a 1/4" spindle gouge.

    Sorry "Hornpout" that's way out of my league to actually turn the wheels, I buy most of mine....
    If what Derek has suggested doesn't work for you,
    try sending a "pm" to John, aka "ninefingers" who makes a lot of his own wheels;
    or Mel, aka "diamondt"
    or Dodge City Kid, aka "BigDBigD";
    or Ross, aka "Aussie";
    or Eddie aka "TKO";
    all of these blokes from memory have turned there own wheels for models.....
    I hope that helps, mean time I'm just looking forward to seeing you 1929 Ford come together...
    Cheers, crowie

    Hi Hornpout,
    Check out "How I make my Tractor Wheels" by me, about half way down the toy making page, it was started 31st Dec 2015.
    DSCF0183.jpg
    It's a tool that fits in the tailstock of your lathe, and the wheel blank is mounted in a chuck, the tailstock is wound in and the cutter shaves of the unnecessary wood, leaving the desired shape of the wheel. .

    The blades are made from disused jointer blades 1" X 3/16" and about 2 3/4"long, easily made with a 4" angle grinder and a Dremel, which is all I use.
    DSCF0184.jpg
    The unit that goes in the tailstock is made from 1" X 3/8" flat bar and machined out to accept the blade which is held down by a 1"X 3/16" flat bar and 2 socket head cap screws,
    For more details let me know and I'll do what I can to help.
