Default Alumilite Clear - Polyurethne Resin casting

    Hi all
Its been some time since I posted.

Ive been reading lots of posts in the internet space on casting Alumilite Clear - Polurethane one. I brought a litre of the resin and thought I'd give it a crack.

im confused.. hey not unusual for an ugly bloke, like me.

Seems it has to be pressurised because of bubbles - that's ok

Seems to have a narrow temp band 22-25C for casting ... bit hard in Qld ... is this critical.

    Does humidity matter ..

Now I mainly do Decals on tubes and cast them in a resin saver mould .. Yes I know I cast Goggomobil pictures.on Sierra blanks ... narrow minded aren't I but I just love a Goggomobil's.

ive sealed the Decal with Mod Podge .. hope this works better than acrylic spray..

im thinking of pouring slowly and minimising bubbles .. keep in mind most of the resin is machined off .... do I really need to pressure cast.

    Randal.

Hmm, someone wasn't listening at the demo.... You have picked the most expensive resin in Aus, and the most difficult to use in QLD, especially in the wet season

The temperature is all about setting times. The 22-25 gives you the setting times on the data sheet, higher temps mean shorter setting times, and with polyurethane they are already short.

Absolutely! Polyurethane reacts with any moisture, in what you are casting, and in the air. Any moisture will turn it milky, large amounts turns it to a gooey mess.

Mod Podge is just watered down PVA, so be VERY careful, it has to be completely dry (read above about reactions with moisture)

The reason pressure is recommended is that it goes off so fast, the bubbles do not have time to rise, but no it is not necessarily "has to be" although be prepared for bubbles. Paint the complete surface with the resin before you put the tube in the mold and add the remaining resin, just remember time is your enemy.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Looks like I'll be casting in a decompression chamber with a heater ... wonder if I can get one of those at Bunnos .. mmmmm. No seriously many thanks for your help.

Sorry I've been quite sick and haven't been to many demos.

Sorry to ask what are the other types of resins ... epoxy, polyester, Cactus juice ...
ive only used polyester and sometimes epoxy ... I found epoxy didn't polish very well ...

I did a test cast today ... 50 g Clear without pressure ... few bubbles until the last 2 minutes when it got warm and then there were lots of small bubbles.

    Default Back to Polyester

sorry didn't read past posts re: casting with Alumilite.

I see what you mean about filling the tube in moulds and pressure. I got the stuff to do my Goggomobil Decals .. no good now.

I got some two pack silicon to make some block moulds so I will make blocks instead.

I've had a lot of trouble with the polyester resin eating my Decals ... say 1 in 4 ... especially the ends.

Ive been using acrylic spray and brush on .... I thought I'd try the Mod Podge

I have to make a lot of Goggomobil Decal pens for next years 60th celebration.

Hi Randel Long time no chat ? Sorry to hear you have still not been very well and I hope you get a bit better soon as I Iam still waiting for you to call infor a coffee I am glad to see you have got things sorted with your decals and from what I saw in the previous picture you are doing well. I have also been making plenty of decal pens but I am about to have a go at a few the way it seems you and a couple of others do them and thats casting them in resin after decal is on ? The question I have with that way is do you just paint the tubes with wite acrylic paint before hand ? I will have a go at some some so hope they work out ok.

    Cheers Ian
Look after yourself Ranndel and hope you are well soon
