    Default Some cast bowl blanks

I cast a couple of bowl blanks yesterday, a 200 dia x 120 mallee and 120 dia x 60 sea borer eaten red ironwood (old wharf timber), both in some bronze coloured mica powder filled resin. When you cast mica (e.g. Pearlex) in resin you can never see what it looks like until you turn/sand it and thought this was a perfect example.

Sanded top face (and a quick coat of lacquer), boy did it pop

I like the effect of the resin tint Neil. Would really like to see the finished bowls.

If I use them myself I will, but I may well sell them, then it will be up to buyer

    Beautiful Neil!

What did you make the mould out of - was it a big silicon block mould (wish silicon was cheaper!), or something clever?

    Cheers,

The large one was a small plastic bucket from the $2 shop (clear with yellow push on lid) that fits in my smaller pressure pot perfectly with a 2" freeboard (but I do have to take the handle off). It has a small taper on it and the epoxy doesn't stick to it so the cast comes out easily.

I could fit a larger bucket in my big pot, there is one from my local tiler's that even has a silicon liner, but the pot is set up for horizontal positioning with a shelf siliconed in, so I'd rather not remove it.

The small one was a plastic screw top container (again from the $2 shop) out of a similar plastic material that the epoxy doesn't stick to.

When it comes to turning a casting like this I have read somewhere that carbide cutters are a good option due to the hardness of the resin. What tools would you use to turn one of these blanks? Would you use a bowl saver on the larger blank?

Yes I mainly use TCT tools. It is not just the resin is hard, the timber is also hard and abrasive, and then the two combined makes it even more hard/abrasive on the tools. On my pepper grinders I even have to sharpen the TCT tools.

I could use a bowl saver, but at this stage, I'm thinking of cutting it in half to make 2 shallow bowls/platters
