US Desert Ironwood cast in Gold/Silver Polyester Resin
Trial polyester resin with silver/gold powder just poured over some cracked and fissured US Desert ironwood burl I had. It was cast in in a PVC tube after I cut the corners off the square chunk of burl and threw the offcuts in as well in any gaps. The resultant 170mm long x 70mm dia blank was subsequently stabilised with Cactus Juice, then after a quick sand back, given a quick coat of lacquer to show colours and seal it. The different colours have not mixed completely, this is what I was worried about, but given me the swirling effect I was after.

I hope to turn this cast into a shaftless Crushgrind pepper grinder tomorrow. Hopefully the epoxy full sized Pepper Grinder casts turn out as good when done.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

Grinder finished with a couple of coats of finish and looking amazing, I will post pics as soon as finished.
Epoxy full sized casts with Coolibah out of molds but letting harden up before turning. Hard to say what they will look like, seems to have swirled well where resin is thick, not so much where resin is thin. They are 75 & 70sq x 360 long and weigh a ton due to stabilizing. Definitely looks like the resin has stuck well. Will post pics of the casts too soon.Neil____________________________________________Every day presents an opportunity to learn something new

The finished Shaftless Pepper Grinder is shown here https://www.woodworkforums.com/showth...66#post1908766
and here are the full sized blanks using Coolibah (75sq & 70sq each 360 long) with the Clear Casting Epoxy. These too are stabilised and really heavy. One is made with a single cracked & voided piece of timber, the other is with 2 pieces cast with the sapwood facing each other
