Label casted

Happy New Year everyone. Well I finally had another go at some label casting of which the photo will appear lately I hope. I have been wondering is there a trick to getting the join right ? do you overlap the join or just make it so they join flush. I have been doing the best to get the join right but I am not having much luck

Now I now why I havent done this sort of thing for ages.

Most times you will get a line from the joins ,mostly hidden by your clip . Your background of the label will dictate how it shows, for instance a black background can be minimised at the joint by using a marker pen to hide the white edge of the paper and so on. Mostly it depends on the type of label you use ,water slide prints in clear work well as they are usually applied to a painted surface and are transparent so no joins show ,in short there is no one answer to all the different variations possible , just what individuals prefer or find acceptable

Ian, I have tried lots of different types of labels and now find the vinyl labels from Decal Paper in Redfern, Sydney the best. They are very quick with delivery, normally next day. The vinyl labels are available individually or packs 5, 10, 15 etc. In most cases you don't need to paint the tube. Just cut to size after printing, remove the backing paper and fit to tube. As Neil suggested, no more than 1mm overlap is plenty and make sure that the seam is well stuck down. When cast, you should only see a thin line, and as John said, the clip will cover most of it anyway. I cut my label a little longer than the the tube and then trim flush with the ends after rolled. This allows for not having to line up the ends of the label perfectly with the ends of the tube.Regards

well things are working out ok but I am seeming to be having alot of trouble with very small bubbles in close and around the label once casted. when it is dry and turned I manage to have little bubbles still visable does anybody had a good way of getting rid of this problem ?

all help appreciated as usual

The bane of all casters (bubbles) you may be getting some reaction with your labels and the PR. A couple of things you can try , spray your label with clear acrylic spray and let it dry properly this seals the label from the PR and helps prevent bubbles. coat your blank with a very thin layer of un catalised PR ,before pouring your mold. warm up the pr before you mix the catylist to help thin it down, don't put too much catylist so it sets up a little slower and gives any bubbles a chance to rise.Once poured try sitting your mold on a vibrating surface for a few minutes to settle it down and help bubbles rise to the top ( a bandsaw table with it running is usually sufficient ) Hope some of this is helpful to producing the results you want

The only way that I can now cast with total confidence is to follow the advice offed by Forum members and use a pressure pot.Regards

Thank everyone for your imput and things are starting to take shape I done all of what you suggested john and I am currently waiting to see how they turn out but so far things are looking good. I will be sure to show the results WHEN they workout good

well Guys all was good Except Now the problem seems to be the join ! it seems to be lifting in a few spots spoiling the look that now seems great. Could this be from the coat of pure resin that I put over the cast before putting it into the mold ? or may I have just not completed the join properly ? I am keen to hear what you all have to say ?

Use some CA over the lap. If you make the label longer then the tube you can tuck the overhang back into the tube.

Ian, I have never had a problem with the join. Are you using vinyl labels or just plain paper ones. Maybe there is air underneath the seam. When I fix the label to the tube, I do it like rolling a smoke (legal one) and pressing the join down very firmly.

Yes I am using Vinyl paper not stickers and to be honest the last couple I done were the only labels that I had trouble with the joins lifting so I may have just stuffed up with the join. I have another Large packet ordered and they should be here within the next few days and then I will get back into it as I have plenty of sierra tubes so I will get this right sooner or later (prob Later). I have been fooling around for awhile now and plan to get this sorted soon. Then I will move back onto making some acrylic blanks (i will send you an email then Russel) I have plenty planned for this year as I was extremely slack last year and got nowhere fast. Also thanks again david for your help and I will try what you said to do with regards to the CA on the join. I still have the template you sent me a year or more ago and at first I thought it was a little to big but it now seems I have been expecting the join to be less overlap so I will perservere with that and see how it worrks out.
