    Default Polyester Pigment source

    Well,

it seems my Poly pigments have gotten lonely from no use, and decided to all die on me, so I need to buy more. I've bought from Barnes before, but for some reason they don't list black?? Aldax supplies Barnes products, but say they won't ship to me!! (after advertising they ship almost anywhere in the world...). And as for AMC, well they are twice the price, so I'm not buying from there.

Anyone know anywhere else that has Barnes prices with the full range of colours?

    Thanks. Russell.

Russell, unless Barnes have stopped making Black they have always supplied it. In fact I have 2 containers here.

    Edit:

Just checked their website and Black isn't listed. I would give them a ring, might be just an oversight as White is listed.

On the subject of the pre-dispersed pigment going off, I have had that happen as well and now I dilute the pigment paste with PR resin by filling up the jar when I first open it. Haven't had one go off since I have been doing that.

    Thanks Fred.

I wondered whether adding resin to the pots would dissolve it again, or if it's too late now. I'd have though putting resin in, that the resin would go off. Is it OK as long as it stays airtight? I have trouble opening just the pigment lids themselves as tehy for some reason glue up, even though I never your pigment out of the bottles, I just stick an icecream stick in and get a bit on the end.

I've never had any luck re-constituting the pigment paste once it goes hard.

In my experience, YMMV, the pigment paste goes off before the resin does. I've never had a tin of resin go off on me yet, but I only buy the 4kg tins and of course our climate is different to yours.

OK Thanks. I guess I might as well try it, I've got nothing to lose. I dug into my apple green this morning. Top was solid, but below is still a little mushy, although not enough to run.

Yes the pigments do go off. To make them last longer, ensure the lids are screwed on tight, then store in cool dark location.

Cheapest place in Aus I've found is amcsupplies. There are other cheaper suppliers overseas, but you need to order a decent amount to overcome the postage, my last order was >$300

    Cheers

You can get these from overseas? I thought they might be one of the things that are classed as dangerous good and wouldn't make it through customs?

Unlike you I have never had any luck with amcsupplies, have even visited their shop in Adelaide. They are a reseller for Barnes and are always dearer than Barnes. Their shop prices are even higher than their web prices. On top of that I found most of their stock pretty old, I needed a couple of colours at the time and, as I lways do, when I opened the jars the pigment had already gone off on the shelf!

In fact I looked just now and their Polyester pigment price is $8.50 for 100 gr, Barnes price is $4.40 for 100 gr. This price surprised because I have always paid $6.60 in the Brnes shop in Swn St Richmond.

BTW amcsupplies do list the Black and if you look at the label it is the same product as the Barnes one.

No problems to date, but I must admit I have only ordered the dyes and Pearlex from O/S

Yep they are Barnes onsellers, and for the pigments, looks like you are correct. It has been a while since I have ordered from either of them and it looks like things have changed. Pearlex and dyes however are still cheaper though from ACS

Hope I'm not out of line mentioning this, but if you are after Pearlex, I can give you the best price from an Australian supplier. My web store is not yet completely setup, but I am operational.

Well after visiting Barns in Brisbane yesterday, I had a bit of a revelation. The reason the PE pigments are only $4.40 on the web site, and why black is not listed. is because they have discontinued those pigments and are selling them out at half price!

There was none in-store, and because I needed them now, I had to end up buying their new alternative, which is the PU pigments, which also work in PE. So now instead of $8.80 for 100gm of pigment, you have to pay $8.80 for 15gm of pigment The 50gm pots are $16.50, which is better value, but still 4x the price of the old PE pigments

I grabbed their 'kit' of 10 colours in the 15gm size for $60. At least with these a little goes a long way. Given I wasted most of what I already have anyway, 15gm may last a while, but I also just ordered 10 bottles of the existing PE from the web site, as it looks like this will be the last chance to get the cheap pigment. If by chance I run out of this lot I am getting, it'll be time to start cruising all the surf board suppliers to see if there are suitable alternatives elsewhere.
