Default How soft is too soft

When it comes to resin stabilizing spalted and punky wood, how soft is too soft? If I stabilized punky stuff that I can crush with my fingers will it become hard enough to be any use after stabilizing?

If done properly, yes. I have had wormy rotten spalted Mango that was almost like sponge before, but after drying and and then stabilising, it was as hard as normal Mango

About the only limitations with the resin stabilizing process is woods that won't take up the resin. Also large cracks and voids won't be filled due to the viscosity of the resin as the heat activation process makes it even more viscos. King Billy Pine is one example that comes to mind, but then its unlikely that you will have punky KBP anyway. With my limited experimentation I have found a few woods that aren't worth the effort of playing with, particularly when dyeing the resin as there is to much variability in the resin take up.

Have a look at this to see how it's done.
