Got around to turning some of the stabilised blanks, so thought I would post another update.

They are weird to turn - produce dust rather than shavings, but it seems to cut very nicely. These are straight off the skew (no sanding), crosscut new guinea rosewood and myrtle burl:

Still have to sand and then decide what I'm going to finish them with (I don't like CA).

Bonus pic of my 'stabilising station':

First dyed batch of blanks due to go into the oven, excited to see how they went!

    Cheers,

    Danny

Given the cactus juice is some sort of polymer, can it be treated the same as CA and polished?

Many of the knife makers here have their handles polished magnificently... Perhaps you could do the same?

Btw, I love that big vacuum chamber

Is the pump quiet enough for you?

It still feels wooden enough that I think the surface would deteriorate without some sort of finish - but not sure, I might have to give it a try!

The pump doesn't make much noise, pretty much as soon as you are out of that room you can't hear it. Bit of a worry actually, I can see myself leaving it running for days by accident!

Stabilising only fills the microscopic air voids with resin, hence making them more solid, the timber fibres themselves do not change and are not turned to plastic like CA soaking. They can be finished like any other piece of wood but are wood not plastic.

Going well! I haven't been able to do as much as I would like, because I don't want to leave the toaster oven running without supervision, so I can really only start drying and then curing when I know I'll be home for a day or two... Lots of fun though - some of my results so far:

Jacaranda stabilised with some violet dye and then some ubeaut green added after turning:

Redwood stabilised with some black pigment - can't decide if I like this one or not, black has a reputation for not working well which I think may be deserved:

These are all stabilised but the one on the left is the one that really benefited, fiddleback blackwood with some violet and black in the juice:

Finally this is stabilised but I didn't really need to, just thought I would show off the pen - more f/back blackwood!

My one attempt so far at a bigger blank didn't really work - I think I either didn't leave it under vacuum long enough, or didn't let if soak long enough. A lesson for next time...

    Cheers,

    Danny

Couple more I finally got around to photographing... There are some imperfections in the finish, but that's an issue with my CA finishing technique (I went away from it for months and now I'm trying it again I am very rusty), nothing to do with stabilisiing...

    Dyed and stabilised fiddleback blackwood:

    Cheers,

    Danny

Where do you buy your 'Cactus juice'? Is the name cactus juice a generic term or is it a specific product?
    Thanks

It’s a specific product, available from timberbits.
