    Default Swamp Banksia Knife Scales

Just finished casting and then stabilising banksia pod knife scales. These are Swamp Banksia that are in between the large WA Aus ones (pepper grinder size) and the small East Coast Aus ones (pen blank size) that are generally 40-60mm dia and 100-190mm long and perfect for knife scales/bottle stoppers/fishing rod handles etc and harder to find. Photos don't show them too well but they are neon purple, neon red and Pearlex blue. Biggest problem is the extent of the "hairy stuff" that is water resistant. If you stabilise first the CJ just runs out before setting if unwrapped or fills the voids if wrapped. I cast then stabilise, wrapping to set the resin in the oven that works for me. Photos are of fronts and backs of each set

And with the usual left over resin, some WA Sheoak pods

Could always try washing the cones with detergent to remove the oils on the fury bits? Then putting it through a dehydrator to remove all the moisture.

Interesting idea, but they are very tightly packed, so not sure the detergent would get in to achieve much. Even with vacuum it takes >12 hours to remove the air from 15mm max thickness scales. It's not till you cut into the hairy stuff do you have problems usually. The scale 2A shows the hairy stuff as a grey in the photo, but it its well and truely stuck in place now.

Just finished shaping up 3 knife handles, one of each colour, and looking good. Still have to fine sand but waiting on sanding supplies to arrive. I'll post pics when done.
