    Default Another Bench

Yes it was about time I made another work bench....but...this time it's for some other odd reasons.

Nephew need a work bench so I gave hime my old one. I didn't feel the real need for it as it was on the small side...and he probably needed it more than I did.

Daughter has an assignment to do (current themes in schools seem to be the environment and recycling)..so me thinks to meself I can help here as....

a few years ago where I worked they would throw out the massive pallets. So I scored quite a few....so going to turn this lot into a work bench with the kids help.

I've modified a 'Shaker style' to suit what I want.

The Bench will be about 6' long and about 3' high (sorry I'm an old fart...imperial is easier for me). The top will be about 3- 3 1/2 inched thick laminated amd 30 - 32 inches wide.

So I started yesterday on making some shavings (actually quite a lot) and thicknessed all the timber. The started on laminating the top...this whole process is going to be quite slow as I have to kids in it.

Anyway the first phot is of some of the pallets I scored (broken down). The next few show most of the timber and the start of the lamination on the top.

What sort of business was it, as I am trying to find some local places I can ask for palettes, so I can use the timber, most of the places I have asked so far have said the same thing, they are on record ie each time one is dropped off with goods on they have to return one.

    Kat,

The place I got these from imported massive printing machines and these pallets were custom made for that printer and were non resuable. Hence they were thrown out.

Sorry I can't help with a place in Perth. Hope you can find one.

Custom made pallets are a good source of timber for the odd bit of shop furniture. Very good to see that all this does not end up in the bin.

I was getting quite a bit at one stage but that stopped as I had a bit too much stuff laying around.

    Will be watching this build.

Don't worry Ray. A bit of a clean up/out is in order. Trying to turn it back into a workshop not a space invading storage area.

    Ray,

At the moment there is a big bench in the far left corner. It came out of the old Sydney County Council metal workshop. Bloody heavy and it may happen to go if I can work out a layout that suits me to keep it..

Ok...got a bit done yesterday and today (in between everything else that has to be done on weekends)

Finished the glueup of the five individual pieces for the top through the week. On saturday put them through the thickky and jointed them on the tablesaw and guled up the top.

Today managed to get all the legs and stiles cut (haven't done the stretchers yet). Even managed to get it all marked up for the mortices and tenons.

Now for the big cleanup and rearranging the workshop...

    Hi Steve,

    Looking great

I had to use a router and sled to level my bench, I do not own a thickneser I am looking at buying one as I am thinking of making a lot of stuff from recycled timber Some of the stuff like egg cups, honey dippers, small bowels, I do not need one, but for the boxes and furniture I think a thicknesser would be INVALUABLE

Keep up the good work mate, you will be thrilled to work on your bench once it is finished.

And when using recycled timber a metal dictator is handy.

Christos is very right, I found 4 small nails that I thought had been removed, it was just they had lost their heads above the wood, may have been punched under the surface.

Carba-tec sell a metal detector that has a round doughnut head, I have been told that this model is the most sensitive. Be careful of metal near by as it can give a false positive, I was removing the metal on 2 home made saw horses with these brackets

It was picking up the brackets which were over 100mm away, but due to their size, they can be picked up further. A small nail / screw / staple may not be picked up 40mm away. On thicker timber (posts and beams) I usually scan each side just to be sure I have not missed anything (circular saw blades are not cheap time spent scanning is
