Default work bench bought at auction

    Hi all,
I've never had a proper woodworking bench. I've always used a makeshift ply topped metal bench for my woodworking and its been very limited.
I was looking at a auction site last week and found a series of old tafe woodworking benches. I put a bid on and won. It was about 150kms from my place, but it was a nice drive to pick it up.
I'll do some modifications to it soon, but it's a good starting platform.

Very nice bench. Such would bring several thousand dollars here.

Very nice - if you don't mind sharing how much did you have to bid to get the bench?

Wow, bravo. That's a killer pickup.

Is it made of Blackheart Sassafras or something? What kind of wood has that kind of sharp transition?

    Any idea what it weighs?

    Cheers,
    Luke

I was winning the bid at $80 for a couple of days then it suddenly went to $280 in the last hour! I ended up winning it for $282. It was more than I wanted to spend, but I still think it was well worth it. I'm not sure what the timber is? It's not extremely heavy either. Someone told me it was cypress pine but the colour transition looks wrong to me??? It has provisions for another vice on the end also. I'm very happy with it.

I think that even with transport you have made an excellent purchase.

If you paid someone even $10 an hour and had free materials you would not end up with a bench like that.

Just a single screw with two guide tubes. It pulls in very straight. I've never had a woodworking bench before so I can only compare to my metal vice! I put a piece of mango I bought from MapleMan a while back in there and hand planned it just for fun. The bench was nice and stable, but could do with a tad more weight in it. I'm sure it'll be fine once I stack it full of tools and bits and pieces.

Wow, bargain! The $282 will be long forgotten once you've used it for a while. I can see you telling the story of 'that bargain woodworking bench I picked up' in years to come.

    Cheers,
    David
