Old bench, Dawn No 8 and dog
Saw this today in a second hand store in Toodyay, not sure if it was for sale, was just being used as a display bench and the bench itself was nothing special. What sparked my interest was the built in dog (probably got another name). The dawn 8 inch looks like a very early casting so I would guess the dog is the same age. Never seen one in the flesh before.
I did see a thread with a heap of these type of dogs on some old European benches but I can't find it (pretty sure it was here). If it was, Mods please move this into it if you think it is more appropriate.

I think the thread can stay where it is.
I have seen this pop up dog before but can not recall it being at this height. How did you get it to pop up?

I know this as a "planing " dog.
It is intended to hold timber while you hand plane.
Have not seen one in many years.

...said the actress to the Bishop ?
I inherited 2 of these bench stops (and 2 Dawn vises!) on an old bench that I bought when the factory I was working in closed down. The works carpenter told me that his father had made it in the early 1900's. Of the 3 screws on the left hand side, the centre one released and locked the riser. I installed one on my current bench but have seldom used it.

Found a picture of it on the forum ...back when my bench was new and shiny ...back when I could still name and explain each ding...

That's it on the front left corner. I foolishly painted it and and the Dawn vise BLUE to match the new Record vise on the other end!

I started my woodworking career in the 50s when just about every bench sported one of these. They never went away entirely, but from the 70s on, became much harder to find, until recently. They seem to be enjoying a bit of a resurgence. I'd be more inclined to use one of these if I had to go back to using a simple stop, at least they are aluminium, and won't do quite as much damage to a cutting edge as a chunk of mild steel would!
I've always been an advocate for wooden dogs & can't for the life of me figure out why anyone ever thought of using metal stops on a woodworking bench in the first place, let alone the plethora of fancy bits & bobs with canine-derived titles that graces LVs cattledog these days! Wooden dogs cost nothing, are easily customised, & hold anything I've ever asked them to. But I've been told in no uncertain terms to sit down & shut-up, by those as love their (metal) doggy companions...
Cheers,IW

I note with some joy that HNT also sell wooden dogs to go with the tail vise. It is a much more comfortable feeling to be planing towards a wooden dog! (There's another cartoon in there somewhere)
