    Default Bench holdf

In the market for some holdfasts but I have a couple of questions for the more experienced

Gramercy holdfasts are $96 a pair and McJing are $36 a pair - is there that much difference to warrant the higher cost?

Ideal bench thickness - is there an ideal thickness? Gramercy say a minimum of 1 3/4" (Lee Valley site) and counterbore a thick bench to 2 1/2" or so (another site).

    thanks

    Peter

Gramercy wins apparently, but others who have the McJings can comment better. Very satisfied with the Gramercy.

You must remove all traces of the oil that they come with, and it helps to run some around 80 grit sandpaper around them (not along) to aid grip.

Bench thickness - if yours isn't thick enough then you could screw & glue some blocks under the holes, and then drill through again. Suggest starting with what you have and see.

I have only used the McJings and find they work fine.
My bench is about 2 3/4'' and holds very well. I have heard that really thick benchtops have trouble holding. The shank needs to take up a bit of an angle in relation to the hole and this is harder to do in a deep hole. Anyhow as said try what you have first.

    Hi Peter,
I have both. Very rarely use the McJings. Always reach for the Gramercy. The McJings work fine, The Gramercys are just better.
A too thick bench can have a wider hole bored part way underneath and as Mr Furniture says, a thin bench can have a block added.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

    Hi Lappa,

I got the McJing ones, as i couldn't afford the Gramercy ones.

    Check out this:
Hold fasts? What do I buy?

    Cheers, Dave
