You might have had a few issues and it was good to see your persistence to get pass this.
Nice end result on the work bench and putting it to use even better.

You have made a very nice and practical bench, which will last you for many years. Thanks for taking the time to document your trials and errors and for the excellent photos. Many people will benefit from your efforts via this forum in the years to come.
It will be a pleasure to use.

Thanks for the comments fellas, much appreciated!
It's a relief to have something decent to work off after years of making do on wobbly $20 saw horses and a cheap Workmate rip off that is now in the trailer waiting to go to the tip. I've been inspired by many since I joined particularly by those that have said they've never done something like this before yet created something practical and nice to look at. Had the timber not been free I would not have considered forking out $ for similar species due to my fear of messing it up and could have easily settled with vices attached to a treated pine and ply bench. But now I'm kind of amazed to look at my bench to see how it turned out. When all I was after was a decent way to hold timber to saw and plane, this experience has been a test and boost to my confidence to try out a bunch of other projects I thought would be beyond my novice skill level.
artful bodger, I didn't realise what a shadow board was until I searched, or didn't know what they were called but yes, I like that idea and it has crossed my mind. Other prospects are French cleats across the back wall, a Studley style tool chest (though not that fancy) or draws underneath. A shadow board will be the quickest cheapest option to get things organised and will be easily reached from where the bench is.
artme, the front vice was from a local engineering store, it's a 7" Spear n Jackson Eclipse EWWQR7. I scored a bargain as it was $89 on sale but usually $160. Timbecon has it for $130ish and a couple other places I saw on the net have the same from $125 to over $200. The tail vice was unbranded and was $60 from McJings.
