    Default bench size

    Hi guys/gals
I am starting to build my workbench replacement at the moment its just mortised legs.
I was wondering the ideal size for a work bench the workshop is 5.8 mtrs X 4.4m
if I put one against the wall was going to make it 1500 X 600 wide or as an island 1500 X 800
going to be a lot of hand tools used the next item would be vices & size. I have bought a leg vise and a 250 mm bench vice should these be enoughor do I need any thing else
what is the size of your bench
    regards Michael

I think there is temptation to build a monster so think about the length of the largest thing you will use a hand plane on. I made mine about 1.8 x 0.6.
I set out for a longer build but realised the need to conserve shed space. Check out the loads of bench builds in this section.
    Regards
    John

    Michael,

Same here 'against the wall or island'.

In the end mainly because I'll be using hand tools I went for an island bench.

    Mine is 1.9m X 900mm. (Grandfather had one that was 1m X 6m).

This way I can use all sides of the bench (which is more the norm than the occasional use).

    Love having an island bench.

I hope all is well with you! Take care, and hopefully it's nothing too serious.
