Benchcrafted Shaker Bench
Well I took the plunge and ordered the plans and hardware for the Benchcrafted Shaker Bench. Arrived on Friday. Have attached a few photos. I plan on making the bench from Tallowwood with Mulga handles for the vices, drawers and leg vice pin. Next step is to collect the wood!

Nice kit DrBob. You will, of course, be doing a WIP
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I do indeed plan on a WIP. Am figuring it will take at least a year to finish.

Cooked my vices
On the Benchcrafted blog they have instructions for using Flaxseed oil to coat the iron hand wheels. Forms a very tough rust proof finish. Here's the photo's post four coats and about 12 hours in the oven.

Count me in as a watcher.

I'm getting in at the ground floor too. A bench using benchcrafted vices is on my list of things to do when I return.

I know it is a personal thing, but what do you think of the new finish? I think the natural look of the wheels is great, but the baked flaxseed looks amazing int he photos. Is the actual finish as good as it looks? Does it have flaws or cracks? And what about its longevity or toughness?
I'm intrigued by the idea, but scared of bollocksing it up.

I'm really happy with the finish. The handles look even better than the photos suggest, with a lovely bronzed colour. No cracking and if the instructions are followed closely it's pretty easy (though I have a few splotches from where I was careless in wiping down). The link on the Benchcrafted blog points to a site on the science of seasoning cast iron skillets for cooking. Figure the finish should be pretty tough if it can cope with metal cooking utensils but time will tell. The site also suggests it can be reversed with oven cleaner if things go wrong. I've tried to clean an oven and it never goes all the way back to shop floor goodness!

Now I'm really intrigued about this bench. Hurry up and start working! We don't have all day...
Just looking more closely at the pics at the top - seems to be a leg vice (nice) wagon vice (very nice) and a moxon twin screw (v v nice)? That would have set you back a pretty penny from bench crafted...

Hi Doc,
What Trav said, we just love bench builds. So will be watching with interest from a comfy chair.
Like those handles!
Cheers

Thanks all. Trav, you obviously know your benchcrafted wheels. You've identified the order perfectly! And yes, Benchcrafted are indeed significantly richer after the buy. My next job is sourcing the tallow wood (just under half a cube by my calculations). Will keep everyone posted on the progress.
