    Nice bench Dave

Did you flatten the bench using hand planes? And if so how did you go with the split top? I can't really tell from the pics but is the gap piece a tight fit or is there room for movement either side? I'm considering a split top but not sure if the gap will be a problem when flattening it with a plane.

I built a router sled for initial flattening and then cleaned up with planes. The gap won't be too much of an issue, it wasn't for me. I left room to move in the gap stop, it doesn't need to be a tight fit and with seasonal movement, a tight fit wouldn't be a great idea in any case.
