    Default A Cheap Workbench

I have access to some radiata pine in short lengths but large section. I believe it could be easily used to make a workbench for very little cost. I will attach a link to the Marketplace and before the moderators have apoplexy that I am violating the rules, although I am making a nominal charge for this timber it is to cover the donation ($20) I made to the Care Flight Helicopter rescue service. It is not my intention is to violate the rules .

    This is the timber:

I thicknessed the timber first, primarily to remove the round edge on on side at least. As it is pine it could easily be done on a "lunchbox" style machine, although mine is a little larger than that, and then I ripped it down just using a pretty dilapidated Triton work bench, but it could be done with a hand held circular saw. I took advantage of the central groove in the timber.

Then I thicknessed it again for depth. It ended up about 90mm deep and about 59mm wide. The idea is glue up staggering the joints. I have just clamped the timber together to show the principle. Legs and rails could be made from the same timber. Long rails could be made by finger jointing or even lap or scarf joints with epoxy glue. This is how I would envisage the timber utilised for a bench. Note this is not glued up and only held by the clamps on a piece of old plywood that was bent.

The pix above are from three lengths of timber. I think a 2m workbench could be made for between $10 to $15 worth of timber.
