Default An extra bench is a really useful thing.....

    For accumulating clutter!

    clutter.jpg

I've been flat-out for a few weeks, with several projects on the go. Today I wanted to use the 'Moxon' vise, & this is what I was up against.

Hadn't realised it had got so bad!

    Major clean-up coming on.....

I hate that - go out to the shed to do something simple and have to do 3 or 4 other things before you can get to it ...

    I aso hate that.

I've been using my my main WW bench for electrical and electronics stuff for the last 4+ years and putting all that stuff away every time I wanted to do a bit of WW was a right PITA.
Recently I cleaned out my study (which had become a junk room) and set up the electronics work in there so I go my WW bench back. On what I called the assembly bench 900 x 2.1m, I have strip about 300 x 1000 mm left to work with, the rest has a grinder, hydraulic press, belt sander and assorted crap on it.

    Glad I'm not alone!

I know a couple of blokes who are so damned organised, their sheds are always clean & tidy. I try, but sometimes I fail miserably......

    Cheers

    Just keep practicing Ian.
You will get there one day.
I've seen other guys benches, well let's say I assumed there was a supporting structure under all the junk mess crap.
With yours, at least you can still see the bench.
I just hope your not in the dog house, because I noticed a bag of opened dog food on the floor.

    Cheers Matt

Remember, boys and girls, if you want the bench fairies to come and clean up YOUR workshop, you have to leave at least one beer where they can find it....

I couldn't let a bench get that messy, my first boss during my apprenticeship use to drum into me, that my bench and work area must be clean before leaving for the day.

Something that has stuck with me

I swear i spend more time cleaning and putting away stuff than woodworking.

Way to go, bryn- good habits learnt early!

In my defence, that is the extra bench - I couldn't do anything at all if my main bench ever reached that stage!

And I try to observe good workshop habits, Matt, honest. I certainly make sure my precious hand tools are clean & stored away before sweeping up at the end of each day. More than once I've noticed some small thing missing from its spot & had to go scrabbling amongst the shavings to find it.......

    Cheers,

I hate an untidy shed but for some reason it always reverts back to being a bomb site. I usually clear up, start the project, work at it until I can't find parts or tools and then stop and clear up again. Then repeat the cycle. I do try to be tidy but the trash spirits are against me.
    Regards
    John

In the end being tidy saves time because you know where everything is.

I disagree every time I clean up I can't find a darn thing.

Lack of space is equally proportional to a messy bench.
