Hospital bed as Workbench
Hi, All I'm looking for advice or ideas o my next workbench. I decided I needed something that could change height to meet the needs of the different jobs and maybe even but used to take things on and off the ute. Long story short I bought and electric hospital bed and electric patient lifter. The electrics on the bed have been fixed and tried with some heavy lifting. The patient lifter has to be worked on but I can see the range of heights for lifting is better for the ute. The old bench at 8' x 4' is also now on wheels but I think I want the new bench to be smaller (stop me stacking things on it ).
Has anybody else converted such a bed to a workbench before?
Even though the bed is rated to carry 400kg I still want to have movable legs that will support it when I work on it rather than eventually destroy the wheels. I'm thinking of keeping the perspex n the centre and surrounding the bed frame with timber and vice.
Appreciate all ideas and comments.
Cheers,

If the bed is rated to 400kg it is a baritaric bed. Can I ask what make and model it is?
One of the problems you might have is that because it has wheels, even when locked the bed might move.
I would be interested in any images you can provide.

Hi Handyjack,
I'll try getting the phone photos on the computer but first some answers. 400kg SWLnext to Dalcross sticker. Then there is the label Alrick ARTG 192062 the stamping is against "Custom" so I can't give model. I know the Linak drives are rated for 12T lifting but that means nothing to the structure. After looking at the structure underneath I'm thinking I will definitely provide independent support all round.

I have a friend who has a kitchen cabinet making business. He uses one of those ex hospital beds to ferry his modules around the work shop. I think it could be incredibly versatile: Possibly it would allow you to still be active in the workshop during times of poor health too .

Yep ready for the poor health with a motorised wheel chair and for the end I even have the morgue trolley. The trolley has actually been good for moving wardrobes around. There is planning for it to be used with the RouterMaster but that's well into the future.
The priority has been making all machinery mobile and even a double sided set of shelving.
Cheers,
Nick

Off the top of my head I don't know what brand my bed/bench is. A mate got onto 4 hospital beds and gave me one. It is very good as a knock up bench especially its ability to have the height adjustable. I only removed some "add ons" and fixed a sheet of MDF onto the surface cut down to just fit the bed. How does it work in service?.... pretty good but it is not as rigid as my wood work bench with vice and it jiggles about a bit. The wheels make it easy to move around and once locked don't move at all. I purposely didn't want remove anything that would to stop it from being a bed just in case my health nose dived and I was needing it for that job.
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod
