Default Irwin Record vice - missing dog

    Hi folks,
i purchased a plain Irwin Record vice second-hand for a good price. The thing's in great nick, hardly any cleanup needed before installation. But the recess where the front dog is meant to be is missing both the dog and dog adjustment mechanism.
Are these the kinds of missing parts which are reasonably easy to find/replace? Or should i just not bother- and just bodgy up a piece of timber/plywood and slot it in there?
    Cheers
    Andrei

Andrei, make the dog from hardwood - it will be less damaging than iron. Cheaper too!

    Hi Derek,
Yes I was thinking something along those lines. I guess i like the idea if having the whole tool with all components. But i had indeed thought the iron dog may be easily and practically replaced with timber (rather than waste time and money finding official components)

Andrei, if it helps, when I had a couple of these vises, I replaced the cast iron dogs with hardwood. The original dogs will damage the work piece. You are not missing anything. I have one old Record from the pre-dog era. It is not missed.

This is how I did a wood dog for a cheap vice I had. As Derek said wood is actually a better way to go.

Found a Paul Sellers clip where he does something similar although I reckon my one is better. My dog is L shaped and by turning it round it sits up or flush with the bench top.

The other alternative is just forget about it, I have been a Cabinet maker for 40+years and I can't remember ever using a vise dog

Too true, China, if you are referring to a face vise. I added a dog to the chop of my leg vise. This is a brass Veritas prairie dog pup. The face is covered in leather. Over the course of several years, it has been used once or twice only.

On the other hand, it would be used a great deal on an end vise.
