IanW is the expert on this, having articles in Australian Wood Review on the subject. Hopefully he will be along.

$43 or so will get you a metal tail vise screw from Carbatec. The rest you can make yourself. I went all out and added some all-thread and a few nuts when I made mine. I almost broke the bank at around $50 for the entire vise.

Reading through ianw's post he mentions the need for a lathe which rules out making a wooden screw for now.

I think the carbatec option will do nicely.

One final question if I may. The bench I am making is based on the moravian which has angled legs.

Has anyone here got any thoughts on an angled leg vice like the below photo? This would remove the need for additional parts to the bench.

I understand the pressure applied by the clamp would not be even on the two sides of the vice, but would this matter and would it differ much?

I dont see the angled leg making all that much difference as all thats been done is tilt the whole thing a bit. The screw being offset will likely mean the sweet spot is not quite the center of the jaw but as the jaw is narrow its not going to be a big deal. After a bit of use you will soon learn just where to place the work piece for best results.
