    Default McJing Hold down/holdfast; cheap....nasty?

I have been looking around the forum at various threads on holdfasts but haven't seen comments on this Mc Jing offering:
    BHF19250B,
    Bent metal bar with knurl

    https://mcjing.com.au/(X(1)S(wttos4j.../BHF19250B.JPG

    Anyone tried them? Any good?

    Cheers

I have had two of them for a couple of years and find them really good. amazing holding power with light knock. I glued leather pads to the faces.

    Thanks Chrism3.
The leather pads sound like a good idea.
Do you know if they are spring steel, bright steel or mild steel? Also, is the knurling sufficient to rasp the holes or just enough to ensure good grip?...They say filing may be necessary which suggests that the knurling might be fairly 'aggressive'.

I have a pair each of two different shaped holdfasts, both from McJings. When I went back for the second pair they didn't have any of the first.
But they both work equally well. The diameter of the knurled one is 18mm exactly around the knurling, and I wouldn't describe it as aggressive at all - see pic. One of them looks like
cast iron/steel, and the other may well be, bit I'm no expert there.

OK. Thanks for that. I think I'll take the plunge.

I have two of the kind in Chrism3's leftmost photo.

What size holes should they really be used in?

They work well for me too, although because I ended up drilling 20 mm holes (didn't have a suitable 19mm bit) I needed to add some extra depth to the holes. I don't know whether they would work in 18 mm holes, or if they might be too tight depending on the bit / hold down tolerances.

They are intended for use with 3/4" (19mm) holes. I would think that the holes should be through the top and greater than 2 &1/2"

Yes, my holes are 3/4" / 19mm. Bits that size are extraordinarily hard to come by in Aus, except for spade bits. I bought a bit from the US.

That's what I thought. They do work in 20 mm, but I needed to add some extra depth to the holes to allow them to hold properly. No big deal.

That was my problem. I think I found one seller of a suitable auger bit (an electronics supply company), but that was after I had drilled the holes.

So next time (?) I make a workbench I'll know better.

    Cheers,
    Iain

After a search just now I can see that there are 3/4" bits in Aus.

I used a spade bit to drill my dog holes and it worked fine. Just clamped a bit of waste wood below to stop blowout.
BTW I have the older cast version Mcjing holdfasts and they work well.

    John
