With one of my mdf benches I made it like a kitchen unit, you can't have enough cupboards or storage space in my opinion. I got some of the plastic feet used in kitchens, this had two advantages, it keeps the bench level and the wood is off the floor and damp does not effect it.

The mdf will not sag if it is part of a carcass.

Took a full sheet of 18mm mdf and put a sheet of maconite on top paint the top every 5-6 years with gloss enamel and 20+ years still going strong
did however use 3x2 pine for the frame and 4x4 for the legs legs

I used this plan (link below) for a plywood workbench, and I think it's great. It uses mortise and tenon joinery, adapted to use with plywood, so it's very sturdy and was quick, easy and cheap to build. I used a lower quality plywood than they did, but if I were to do it again, I would go with a nice birch plywood (the cheapo stuff just splinters too much). For the top, I used MDF topped with some leftover laminate - works nicely and so far it has stayed nice and flat.
