    Default Moravian Work Bench

I never met Robo or Chris Schwartz, but their benches have made them famous, but a bench is kind of personal thing so most people will build to what they want or need. I ran across this bench build on what is called the Moravian bench and it looks like a good bench the guy building the bench made a few changes that I Agree with. Has any one built one of these, if so is it a handy bench to work on.

    Hi,

I actually just registered. And this is my first pst here.

I built this workbench during a class lead by Will himself a few months back. I am living in North Carolina at the moment. But I will be moving back to Woodend in December.
The class was really great. The bench, the first I built, is great. Only a few screws, very simple to take apart. So I will be bringing it with me home. I will probably have to build a second one because my wife does not want me to put it in the shed.
I will put some photos a bit later on.

    Cheers,

    Christophe

It is one of the designs I looked at a few years back when collecting ideas for a bench. It has some really good features. The best being that it comes apart so one person can transport it. In the end I opted for a split top but did make it so that it comes apart for transport.

It is silky smooth, as is the Bamboo bench top, which is also right at the top of timber hardness (even though it's grass and not timber).

Funny you should mention bamboo....I was in Bunnies today looking at a laminated bamboo benchtop, 2.2m x 700 x 26mm thick for about $100. I'm considering laminating this to a 32mm thick IKEA Laminex kitchen benchtop to give a total thickness of 50-60mm for a workbench top, and a bit of weight. I was wondering about the properties of bamboo as workbench material - how stable would it be, and how would it plane flat if required??

I've got my eye on one of Terry's front vises too - tried one at the Canberra WWW show, and was very impressed. Price wise, it's about the same ballpark as some of the better Veritas vises through Carbatec.

That seems really cheap for the bamboo. The closest to that I can find online (Bunnings) is nearly $500 for slightly thicker.

I suspect it's just fine under a plane.

Had a chat to Terry on Saturday about the vise - maybe some wider faces coming (yes please), and maybe an option for a handwheel rather than the little handle - maybe give the handwheel an almighty spin for a quick close.

I bought the combo HNT Front+tail vices for my next project, a Moravian bench. Timber is blackbutt and turpentine.

Regarding bamboo, we looked very briefly at it when we planned putting wooden floors in our house. No good. We went with Turpentine. Brilliant choice. Easy to fix scratches or full refinishing.
