I had a look in Hoadley's book of "Understanding Wood" bur couldn't see a specific term. The terms "early" and "late" wood are a bit misleading as it implies that there is a correlation with calendar seasons. Apparently these layers or growth rings are simply associated with rapid versus slow growth periods. In places where rainfall/temperature changes are regular this might be teh case but if rainfall is erratic the or temperature is variable the growth rings can occur at anytime.
BTW that is a terrific book even if it is biased to northern hemisphere species.
Oh yeah - cool bench ochaye - something else to aspire to!

Hi Fencefurniture,
I did not find the bench surface to be particularly "wavy". Perhaps it is due to the fact that the douglas fir is probably 60 years old and was slow grown ( has very tight growth rings) . My previous bench, also of douglas fir, had a 20 odd year life and was also old and tight ( the latter probably an apt description for some of us on the forum). I have noticed that recently miled "oregon" is considerably more "wavy"
Thanks for the kind words from other woodies. It's good to hear that recycling is alive and well
