Default Simple Pine Bench with dropsaw

Here is my very simple bench setup. All I really needed was a basic large bench with a spot for my 305mm dropsaw. For many years before I built my shed I had to drag the saw out and set up temporarily everytime I needed to do a cut.

Kept it simple (and cheap). Frame is 90 x 35 MGP10. Benchtops are 25mm MDF (two pieces per bench) which I got for nothing. Bottom shelf is orange tongue flooring offcuts left over from when I floored inside the carport roof. Frame assembled with 75mm gal bugle head screws (I love these things). Top and shelf glued and fixed with a fixing gun. Cost so far $70

Each bench is 2100 x 850. Size was determined by the MDF available. The dropsaw needs heaps of room behind the fence due to its size. I don't need the benches this wide so plan to run shelves along the back of each bench when I get a chance. Currently thinking how to have a fence on each bench that I can remove when not needed.

I plan to make three drawers per bench and mount them under the benchtops.

    Thumbs up I like it....

Great idea putting the saw on a lower bench..... Gives you a large saw bench that is useful for other things.... Probably too useful, mine would be cluttered with a lot of rubbish in 5 minutes!

    Hi DanniS,

That's a very practical way you have approached the task. Now finish the job off by adding a full length fence to L of the saw so you will have a precision docking station. I have a very similar set up to yours and I have a fence of about 125mm by 35 mm set on edge to L of saw.It took a stack of work to get the fence set up exactly in the correct plane and with both the necessary approach angles spot on.Lots of shimming and lots of swearing in sotte voice. It's worth getting this right if you are doing a heap of repetitive cuts. With my set up when I have a fresh sharp saw in place I can cut off a 4 x 4 black wood table leg leaving the cut line visible all round. You can buy all manner of expensive gizmos and measuring tape affairs to attach to the auxiliary fence for precision docking tasks. I use a bit of accurately squared MDF clamped to the table top. Works perfectly every time and cost is zero.

Do let us all know if you find an effective way of catching the dust off your set up. That's an immense downside to an in situ CMS set against the wall IME.

    Good job. regards Old Pete

    Thanks Old Pete.

Would love to see a photo of your fence. I'm a little lost. Left side only?

Thanks very much, Danny, for all the info and pics.

I, too, am interested in any duster.

I picked up a GMC dust extractor for very little. This will probably turn out to be a piece of junk but worth a try.

Thought I should close off this thread. I moved house and had every intention of taking my new bench. Renting a little townhouse while we build and ran out of storage space VERY quickly.

I realised at the end of moving day 1 that I would not be able to take my benches. Ended up selling them for a token amount to my very good next door neighbour. At least I know they will be looked after.

New place ready in Jan/Feb so new bench will be one of the first jobs.
