| | Split top bench with Hovarter vises and hinged casters for maneuverability Bench is 2200 long, 700 deep, and 1050 high (I'm tall). Constructed from Swamp Oak and Jarrah, with Oak Burl vise hubs.
Vises are Hovarter quick release face and wagon vises.
When designing the bench, I utilised many different features from benches here on the forums (so a big thankyou to everyone who posts their own benches for the rest of us to get ideas from).
One feature I struggled with was how to make the bench moveable, yet not sit on casters permanently. It had to be quick to transition from casters to sitting on solid legs, but not use a car jack or anything else as cumbersome. I was unable to locate any suitable solutions that met my requirements, so I've designed my own. I'm happy to share the solution as I know others are struggling with this problem as well.
I had planned to do a WIP, but got too busy building it, and didn't stop to post any WIP shots (but have taken lots of photos) , so I can do a belated WIP if anyone is interested.
Below are pics of the finished item, and a quick video I did showing the main features. Hope you like the result. Feel free to borrow my ideas (because I already borrowed them from others ).

| | Great job TN
A very handsome bench. Like the mobility invention. I went the simpler route and just don't move mine.
Oh and us couch potatoes will never say no to a WIP, belated or not. |

| | I'm still trying to work out how to embed the youtube video. I can't figure it out.
I've seen others include videos, but not just a link to it - rather the video frame appears inside the thread. Any ideas how to do that? If not, I'll just put a link to the youtube video I did.

TN | Easy, go to your youtube video, copy the address from the address bar, back to your post, paste address, youtube frame will appear once you save the post. |

| | Thanks Big Shed. I thought there was a way for the video frame to appear, instead of the link, but no matter, as long as people can get to the video if they want to see it.
Apologies on the poor video - a movie star, I ain't !!!
Maybe next time I'll get Brad Pitt to do the video for me
Hoping others find the hinged casters idea useful. I thought a video would be the best way to demonstrate how it works. (you know - a picture is worth a 1000 words, and a video is worth, err, more !!!)

| | Good stuff TN
I better pull out my finger, the vices are still on a shelf here along with the holdfasts.
Like your castor solution.

| | Ian,
The bench came up very well. I bet the felder came in handy during the build!
Have you started getting into hand planes yet? You'll find the split top design will be so useful when you do.
Could you also please post your WIP pics? I'd really like to see them.

| | Very nicely done
Also like the wheel arrangement - I know Chris Schwartz has talked about a hinged piece like that, but your solution for jacking the bench up and holding the wheels in position is downright cunning.....
Any issues to report with fitting the Hovarter vices, or do they all go together pretty much as advertised?

| | Very nice indeed! Curious why you used locking castors in stead of fixed wheels.
