    Default Split-Top Roubo

    Hi

I plan on making the Split-Top Roubo as constructed by Mark Spagnolo (aka the wood whisperer) on his site. (paid membership only)

My query is, as I live in Perth, what wood do you think I can constuct the top from.

I do not mind using recycled Jarrah for the legs etc but I would like a light coloured wood for the top such as an ash or maple etc.

    Cheers

Have you seen Derek's bench ? From memory he used Tasmanian Oak.

I know of a bloke using salvaged 5 x 3 hardwood bearers faced with 7 mm Am. Oak.
Everything is faced, legs, top, end caps all oak and a solid 4x 2 oak dog rail.

Have you considered Wandoo ? It should be plentiful in the salvage yards. Oiled, it is a light wheat colour. It's very tough and dense. I've used it as finger boards, it's light enough I can use black fret markers.

Tassie Oak and Maple ( Qld ? N. American ? ) are used more as furniture tinbers.
Getting enough 2nd hand for a bench might be a worry.
    Cheers, Bill
