Default Tail and leg vice hardware

I'm looking for decent quality, yet reasonably priced hardware for a leg and tail vice.
Obviously the Benchcrafted gear if beautiful, but landed in Australia, the cost puts it out of reach.
This is for a new bench build (split top roubo), but want to wait till I have the vice hardware before making a start, so am highly motivated to find something.
    Any pointers would be appreciated.

    Lance

Have you looked at the vises that Terry Gordon (HNT Gordon) has to offer?

Thanks Derek, I hadn't. He has a very neat tail vice! Have you used his vice, and if so, any thoughts?

    Gday Lance,

I don't have one of Terry's tail vice's fitted to my bench...YET... I have used one a few times and they are fantastic. Quick and easy and hold well with very little effort. I will be getting one for my soon to be bench upgrade.

I currently have a leg vice which I made with a vice screw.https://www.carbatec.com.au/clamping...places-ctv-514. A little bit more fiddly than the benchcrafted stuff having to adjust the pin in the guide at the bottom, but the 3 seconds it takes I barely notice.

    cheers

    Thanks Shane.

That's good feedback on the HTN tail vice. It's a different take on the traditional tail vice in that you can't clamp tall timbers "through" the bench, but you can do that on the leg vice anyway. The other advantage I see is that installation appears to be a whole lot simpler, in that you don't have to build the bench "around" the tail vice.

Regarding the leg vise, I was considering doing something similar with the carbitech unit you linked to or a similar timbecon ones. Do you have some photos of your vice online anywhere?

I was actually looking at a youtube clip yesterday where someone had made a dead simple ratchet system for the bottom of the leg vice, negating the need for a pin.

    Hi Lance

The HNT Gordon end vise works smoothly and is easy to install. The only down side is that one has to drop in dogs, as opposed to the dogs being pushed up when needed.

Regarding the parallel guide, consider the AYS chain .. http://www.inthewoodshop.com/ToolRev...nAdjuster.html

Never a truer word has been spoken

I'm building a split top Roubo (well, I picked up some blackbutt and started milling it about 2 years ago, and haven't progressed much since!). I desperately wanted the Benchcrafted leg vise, and if I knew I would stretch out the build this long I could have saved for one! I ended up getting the Veritas Twin Screw vise, and for the tail vise I bought HNT's tail vise.

I've used both on other people's benches, and found them really good.

That chain leg vice is fantastic. Very clever. Thanks for the write up too.

This is pretty much the same as mine but instead of the ratchet system mine has holes and the pin.

I've used the HNT Gordon tail vise at a wood show. I already had one at the time, but if I had not I would've seriously considered it. It seems like a great tool that would be fairly easy to install.
