Thread: WIP - Groggy's Workbench

Made some progress today. It seems the more I am getting done the more the missus needs something done

The wobbly old bench is back in action although the top and shelf are not yet attached (so sue me ).

Pic #1 - bench in place behind the table saw, Side panels in place but not attached. Frame is very rigid and light (until I put 40mm mdf on it

Pic #2 - ADVERTISEMENT - Part way through I changed the blade on my jigsaw to one of the Stehle blades I bought from SawandBits website. What a difference! These blades are great, so good that I have just gone back and ordered more. For 33c for a pack of five you cannot go wrong. They cut better than the Bosch blades I had.

Pic #3 - Shot of the frame, shelf and corner blocks for strength. The back panel is to stop dust from the saw falling into the storage area.

Pic #4 - making sure the slider doesn't foul the bench.

Pic $5 & #6 The top will eventually have hardboard on it with slots for the mitre gauge to slide through. The straight edge is set up to show the gap. There is also a little extra gap for leveling which has not been done yet.


A good day. Lots achieved and a bit more room to move. I might be able to get back to the main bench soon. This should be the last post for the WOB unless I put drawers in while waiting for timber for the main bench top.

Hope you left enough hours at the end of the day to stand back, lean and ponder while you had some vitamins as you mused over the days work.

Sadly it rained and I had to race around putting tools inside and moving timber under cover.

You need a bigger shed.

Weekends are shuffling along rapidly here Groggy, any progress. This is almost like my favourite TV series, I need my weekly fix!

Dave, I had to take time out to have my gall bladder removed (last Tues) but I'll be back in there this weekend. I was ok Sunday but the missus wanted the lawn mowed and whipper snipped.

Not sure what I am going to do, I might build some shelves for the WOB and trim around the edges.

I made up the top today but haven't quite finished due to a blocked gutter and a downpour

Managed to trim the top and get the masonite in place with carpet tape. Sometime during the week I'll rout the slots to match the TS and work on getting it dead-level with the TS. A bit of wipe on poly and its done. Then back to the main bench and start on the top at last.

Here's the top. A simple setup of mdf and masonite routed to allow sleds and mitre gauges to slide out. The masonite is held by carpet tape but after a few warm days I decided to pin it down with some screws. I do not want any catches while feeding a panel through the saw.

Once I get to the store for some screws the top will be fixed through the brace blocks to hold it down and flat. No need to worry about expansion as it is just mdf. A light wipe of Trad Wax and she is ready for business for another 30 years

Where's the dust? The coffee rings and vitamin stains?
