Flippin' top
Lots of fun today. Bruce and I decided we could flip the top ourselves. I tell ya, we are probably 220kg between us, and lifting that thing had us making girly noises. First, the slab was lifted by Bruce on one end and I moved the holdfast up a hole. Then the other end is lifted and the other holdfast is raised. Repeat twice more and the top is 300mm below the top of the frame.
Now, grab an end and lift the top (start girly noises here), stand it on its edge on top of the frame - rest (end girly noises here). Make mental note that all body parts are still where they should be, then plan next step.
Now slide top over to far side of the frame and gently lower it onto its back. Make a few more girly noises just for effect. At this point Bruce scarpers off and leaves me to it (thanks mate ).
Now to flatten the thing, oh my gawd, is that a 1.5mm variation? Groan....

A couple of gratuitous pics of the top. This is now mostly flat but still needs finishing with a sharp smoother. The front skirt is dry dominoed in place so I can get the top flat and level. The clamps are just to stop any tendency for the skirt to move. This has to be done first as the template for the Benchcrafted wagon vise references itself from the top and, if the dimension changes too much, the handwheel may protrude over the top. I definitely do not want that to happen.
The tool used as a 'scrub' plane was a stock Stanley #4 with a ASW blade. Love that blade The long plane is the HNT Gordon jointer which was a godsend for getting the top flat over the full length. When you get a full 2500mm shaving out of that plane it is a satisfying moment.
Now I need to cut the rebates for the end caps, flip the top again on its edge, square up the skirt to the top, flip the top again, cut the opposite end cap rebate, cut the deadman slot, cut the vise slot, rebate the end caps themselves, make some big dovetails, install the vise, test it, remove it, route slots and drill for the end cap bolts, install the end cap bolts, make a chop, install the leg vise hardware, trim the deadman, remove the temporary frame, mark the mortise positions, flip the top again, cut the mortises, flip the top, seat the top on the mortises and drawbore them, finish the chop and vise, final smooth the top, tidy up and put the tools away, drink a big beer.

Very nice Groggy. The full length shaving was most impressive.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Beautiful job Groggy!
I'm waiting to see the picture of the first nail hammered into the new bench top..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.

Jarrah
I only got a few of them and was lucky to get one on camera. The top isn't totally flat yet, still 0.5 to 1.0mm in some places. I'll get there eventually but have a rather big sharpening session to do first. I noticed a couple of the blades need their edges rolled a bit.
Thanks WW, not in your class at all but I am learning a lot and enjoying it immensely.
The first nail really won't bother me much, it is just a bench after all.Last edited by Groggy; 9th October 2011 at 05:57 PM.
