'Twas good to see the bench in the flesh Groggy. A testament to your photography skills; it looks just as impressive in the photos as in person. Jake asked me later on Saturday when we can come visit you and Sally again, so I might drop in again soon

P.S. Those blades work embarrassingly well too, many thanks.

Ta. I didn't get much done today. I found some rust starting on a few tools and decided a cleanup and oiling was in order. I got a little carried away and now the shed is spotless

You are always welcome, and Sally loves company

Surprising isn't it? My Freud blades are sitting on the shelf while I use a blade a fraction of the price and get a better result.

Worked on the deadman today, I keep worrying that I'll forget to rout the slot for it and put the top on so I started it. First I had to finish thicknessing the deadman then cut the tongue at the top for it to slide in.

It is about half done at this stage, I had to stop using the router as it was getting late. Tomorrow I'll finish it and maybe start on the end cap slots.

The final pic is the dust collecting setup, it worked ok but I need more air sucking from the vac to handle this much sawdust. Maybe a CT-36 instead of the mini...

    Hi Groggy
Were you in the service? Those are nomex flight gloves are they not? do you wear them while routing?

I spent 27 odd years in the RAAF and picked up around 3k hours. The gloves help some days and are good with splintery woods.

Default Ta da! Finished the deadman.

The deadman was sanded down to 180 then wiped over with EEE. It makes quite a difference to the clarity of the grain. A few photos show it partially complete for contrast. It was wiped over with Trad Wax as a finish. I wanted the wax finish as it resists glue and stuff that will invariably fall on it and the rest of the bench.

Any timber experts want to hazard a guess as to what the deadman is made of?

Finally, I hope Wongo is happy now, he didn't like the original pine mockup.

Groggy im no timber expert by any stretch however the deadman looks quite similar to my WA Karri floor boards.

    Default Layout day today

Since it is "Talk like a Pirate Day" I have spent most of it saying "aaarrgghh, that'll do". I don't know how many times I have read the vise instructions now, but it is a few. I've measured the slot for the carriage and also measured up the slots to drop the end cap bolts into. The wide slot across the bench is going to a rebate to allow me to use a spanner to tighten the bolts.

You know I could say something here but I feel that I said too much or was that not enough.
