    Default Had a visitor

kman-Oz dropped around today as I was putting the skirt and end caps on for a trial run with the bolts.

It is good to talk to different people, you get so many different ideas and questions it makes you consider more options.

This weekend I was rudely interrupted by a flood through the workshop so I lost Friday evening and Saturday to damage control. Today I managed to complete the marking up and drilling of the LH endcap for the nuts and bolts; fortunately that all went without a hitch.

On to a dry fit with the bolts. Still a few minor issues to sort out with getting things flush; it never seems to end. The skirt is not quite flush with the other face when inserted in the dovetails so a little planing is in my near future I think.

Still need to drill the hole for the vise screw to go through then I am pretty much ready to do the glue up.

Good to see you again Dave

I was sketching away furiously last night and thinking about how to manage the deadman. I'm seriously reconsidering how to make the wagon vice after having a closer look at your hardware too.

I'll be sure to invite you next time I have a day off.

Now that the top is assembled the finessing has begun. All of the minor variations add up and mean paring a bit here, planing a bit there. When sitting in the end caps the skirt sits proud of the rest of the bench by 1mm at one end and 2 mm at the other. There is also a slight gap when it sits unsupported.

Yesterday this was dealt with and there is a very slight gap remaining to be worked out. I need to get this sorted out before I can drill the hole for the wagon vise.

But have we passed the half way mark yet?

BTW using a nail gun instead of dovetails makes it go a lot quicker.

Getting the front skirt to sit flush is proving to be a challenge. Not only does the skirt need to sit flush on the bench face but it also has to sit perpendicular in the dovetails and still remain flush on the bench. After fiddling for a few hours I've got it down to only a few spots with a 4 thou gap.

It'll be awesome when it's done, but in the mean time I'm glad it's you and not me! I consider myself a patient man, but this would probably prove too much.

Why didn't you just wack some bog and epoxy in, and add some more bolts till it tightens up.

    Cheers,
