Thread: WIP Scrap mobile workbench cabinet.

So the work in progress continues with a draw. Only timber I know I'm working with is some plywood and probably pine piece. I have no clue what the redish wood. All wood I use come from unknown pallets. Redish wood came up nice after a plane and hit of the sander. I need to get some finer sander paper. I'm hoping to get hold of a v belt for my Durden junior joiner and some time when my son isn't asleep to start table top.

So when you dont have experience and not having right tool at hand. I struggle a bit to get to next part of a build and create a mental block.

With this scrap build ive got a few challenges as i dont have cash to dump into it to get right tools. So where do you turn. Well i look at youtube or internet for inspiration.

So in order to keep this project ticking I've keep running to the fact. I've got one g clamp and a work table wood vice for glueing. This an issue as I've run out clamping space for larger parts.

So today im going to build a glueing rack and finished the draw.

Bonus work time. While letting chicken roam, I started to sort out the bench top.

I put my bench to work with miter screw to it and set up a end stop get board just right. Then set about ripping down to about 30 mm wide. So bench top be 435mm wide by 1090mm long and about 30mm deep. Figured that be a decent work bench size and thickness.

The miter saw going to hang off a hinge panel. So swing out of the way when not in use.

Front doors are going to house my tools. So I've allowed them to roughly be 40mm deep. But that a really rough ball park figure.

This bench is rough and ready but same time it not. Each part of build I'm putting in new skills. Try build up experience and learn from them.

Something I'm teaching myself along the way is patience. I cant just crack on as family time is important while taking time off work. Plus if I rush I tend to make mistake and quality suffers.

I'm sorry this isn't a grand piece of furniture but as my wife says "got to start somewhere."

Through caution to the wind did the whole bench top glue job in one go I don't have another clamp and so I just use bench vice.

I've mounted the top. Started to planed and sanded one half call. Then I call it quits to darn hot. I've screw up measurements and top short by a stick. I have a spare stick and I will have to glue on an plane it down. But looks good and I'm happy with it. Using some second planes I pick up four for fifty bucks. My favourite so far is a Falcon Pope No.F4.

So I had a little bit time in shed by myself, today while letting chooks out. So crack on with a bit more. Table top needs a final sand but done. So I filled in a panel top next to where draw sits to the right. I installed a strengthing piece of timber at base. It also keep the milk crates in home position when rolling the bench around. I also made home for my planes and a slim shelf that some stuff sits neatly. Also got couple other ideas for storage tubs for screws and nails. But doors and miter saw on the next thing. I've got now a coping saw and a ryobi 18volt jigsaw from santa. So some more tools that I can do more stuff with.

First time using a zero clearance table saw is awesome toy for the shed. I slotted in aluminium foam composite board that I scored from the wife cafe refurbish. I wanted to do dove tails but my skill level and lack time I couldn't do them to the level I would be happy with.

So I went with a but joint and dowel pins. I chuck a nail in as some of the timber spilt with the dowel joints.

Definitely learn a lot from this single door. It useable but not great.

Onto the next time. I'm then going to hang them and filled with some tool racks.

Both doors are on bench. Also sort a milk crate for storage. Using as much scrap laying around. Still got long ways to go. Back making progress.

Miter saw got a home on my bench. The whole setup is fully adjustable to accommodate future replacement of miter saw. Took a bit figuring out. But miter saw got a home. On too next part of project. I know workbenches should be simple but I want this bench to hold nearly all my stuff in one place

Quick addition before I tidy and lock chooks up. Add a buckets system on a draw sliser for added storage of screws and hardware stuff.

No idea why I haven't seen any of this thread prior to today. A leaking shed, tools and timber aren't a good combination. A good way of using up some scrap timber and rescued ply, and you seem to be making things to last. I rather like your racks for cartridges & spray cans, might incorporate the idea in one of my shed re-fits. Trying to juggle full time work, a little apprentice and not a lot of space can be a challenge, but good on you for having a go.

what grabs my attention is the practicality.... no fancy workshop with all the trimmings,
no laa dee daa top of the range power tools,

mate you have set yourself a task and worked with what you had, not wishing for this and that.
And you have a tool chest/work bench to be proud of and you aint finished yet...Salute you.
