Workbench WIP
Due to moving interstate, ive was forced to part with my timber stockpile (which hurt ALOT) and my workbench. My tools are currently scattered around the floor and a workbench is currently priority!
So it was about time to revisit the workbench thread, is pretty inspiring seeing some of the WIP, like dans blackbutt and Groggys workbench...amazing stuff!
Due to not having any supplies and having to watch the back pocket, I visited a few recycled timber places and picked up some cheap 4x2 pine lengths. Managed to throw together a basic frame for about $30. Its about 2300mm in length and 950mm in height. Here is a pic....
Now just have to source some nice timber for the top and am thinking of putting some trim around that. Was trying to stear away from ply or MDF. Pretty basic table really but cheap and quick to assemble. Any advice on how I could improve this workbench would be appreciated, as this is my first one ive constructed.
Thanks everyone

I can't see the pic - just a box with an "x" in it.

The workbench I used to use had the frame made out of pine.
Then had half sheet metal, 1/2 pine for the bench top.
Under the sheet metal was pine to make the surface more stable for the heavier jobs.
Pretty cheap and non-fancy but still did the job and easy to clean when done.

2 or even 3 layers of particle board flooring with a hardwood trim around the edge will be solid and not too bad on the pocket. The other way is recycled wood but a fair bit of work denailing, dressing and the glue up.

Good idea's, didnt think about having half metal and half wood, could be good when playing with stuff that may damage the surface. I think ill keep my eye out for some cheap sheet metal.
Particle board could definatley do the job however i wont get that nice timber finish we all crave and I dont mind fixing up recycled wood.....if i get it cheap enough
Just sanded back the frame and gave it a coat of Danish Oil to seal it up.....didnt really need it but whats a bloke to do when all ya got in your shed is pine!Live life to the fullest, you have to go big and do everything with your all or why do it at all?

Tryed to find some nice timber for the top but could not find any decent timber for a decent price. Will have to do some more searching around for some good suppliers.
So plywood it is
Rough fit up today but the top and trims still need a sanding and some oil

Another member on this site has suggested using an old (or new) solid core door for a workbench top...
Maybe that would be better than ply?
Hope that helps

I think the bench looks good. As long as it is useful it is good.

Bench looks great Dan. Top job with minimal fuss and expense.
Is that a double garage?.....lots of potential thereThe time we enjoy wasting is not wasted time.

Nice work Dan, looks good and very serviceable. Ply looks good. I have a similar design myself but with chipboard top which has proved to be very satisfactory over about 15 years. Made a new one to extend the old one recently and used chipboard on that too.
Doesn't look the best but hey, its cheap and it works for me. Well done mate.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Thanks guys,
Its definatley a bench you can throw together quick and because of the price is easy to get approved by the 'boss'
Would like to put some time into a proper woodworking bench in the future, like some of the jaw droppers in this forum!
3 toed sloth - New garage is a double besides swinging cats around i have no idea what to do with all this space! Parking a car in there somehow feels like a waste
