Default My first laminated and offset bowl

This is my most ambitious project so far and I think it turned out well (for a beginner).

I was given a piece of a tongue and groove darker hardwood that I am told came from a local winery which I cut into two 8" x 8" pieces. I then added a piece of radiata pine I had lying around.

They were glued with Titebond II then clamped, and put through my circle cutter on the band-saw.

I attached the blank to my face plate using some timber roofing hexbolts, may have been overkill, but I didn't want it letting go. I placed 2 large washers under the face plate to give the offset angle, and then reached for the chisels and power button.

A little care was needed due to the different densities of wood so as not to over gouge the softer pine. The vibration was well below what I expected, and the knuckles are all still intact.

For my first complicated project I think it turned out alright. The final picture shows it next to a natural edge bowl I did a while ago from a piece of gum pulled out of my firewood heap. And I am also responsible for the poppy nearest the bowl. The natural edge bowl did cost me a little skin when my knuckles got a little too close - I have since added a goose neck scraper to my collection.

You've done a good job turning the laminated bowl but I really like the natural edge bowl. Nice shape with good colour and grain. Well done.

    Very interesting, looks very nice.

How did you finish turning the bottom?

For brevity I kept the list of pictures short. I should have included this one showing the intermediate stage, see it as Pic 3.5 in the story.

Thanks for the comments on the natural edge bowl. It's my wife's favorite. It started life as a piece of gum destined for the log fire, but since taking up turning I now look at wood a little differently than in the past, and just before launching the bits into the fire I ask myself if there is a potential project here. I have added a few pictures from log to bowl. The final picture shows the prior bowl, also from a piece of fire wood.
