    Default Tangye wood lathe

    Hi all.

I normally reside over in the metalwork part of the forum but today I need to enlist the help from some woodies! At a recent local T&T market this Tangye lathe looked lonely so I took it home. For $20 how could I say no?

Anyway. Im curious to know more so a google search told me a bit about the Tangye company but not much about this particular lathe. Any info on it, including its age is much appreciated.

It looks very similar to one on youtube that was treddle powered.

    Cheers.

Simon, I have never heard of that brand. But I don't get out much. For $20 I think you have done well. It may not lend itself to "modern" additions but it will turn wood and you could have a lot of fun with it. You fellas who live nearer the populated areas are lucky because up here it is rare that such machinery comes up for sale. Although Clearing Sales on properties can show the odd "bargain" but even thats rare.
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

Looks interesting that's for sure. Just need to get a motor on to it. It the tail spur a "dead center" ? Does the drive spur screw off? Is there a morse taper under there?

Thanks guys. Really appreciate the replies. I have not had a good look at it as yet, it's just sitting in my shed in a holding pattern atm. The TS is a dead centre. As for the headstock, have not really touched it yet, so I don't even know the nature of the bearings but suspect they are either CI or bronze bush, there it a bit of play but you would expect that from it's age. In terms of work holding, I'm quite ignorant wrt to how things set up with wood turning so I couldn't even tell you yet how compatible it is to modern work holding methods. I will endeavour to take the HS spindle apart and have a closer look. I'm hopeless, for $20 I couldn't resist! I may even get crazy and hand scrape the bed to flat, not that it's in bad shape anyway. Cheers, Simon

That sucker is old atleast a 100 years I think cause the outboard bolt takes the spindle thrust and they stopped doing that around the turn of the century. Judging by the fact it used to have back gears I would say your asking in the wrong place Its for plain metal turning and probably had a compound slide with the tool rest think of a giant watch lathe. Came from Birmingham rather obvious I think they had alot of makers once.
