Red face Brisbane North - VicMark VL250 for sale

We have a VicMark VL 250 for sale. My father passed with a shed full of items and we are finally in a position to be able to move the lathe out of the shed and sell it.

It has been sitting unused for a number of years but was working quite happily. I'm sadly unable to test it as we have no power on at the property.

Given it's age etc any offers over $400 will be considered.

If you are interested best offer after two weeks will be contacted.

I have photos, but I can't add them as attachments as yet.

    kind regards
    Rebecca

    If it's a VicMark VL250 at $400 it's a supper bargain,
I have never seen them sold for less than 50% of new.
They hold there value because they are so well made.
I already own a VicMark otherwise I would have taken it.

    Just saying.

Rebecca, I too think that your starting offer price, is well below what a machine of this calibre is worth.

Although it is probably not in the greatest of shape, the basics of the lathe are tremendous. I occasionally turn on a VL250 and while more modern lathes are better, it is a very solid piece of equipment.

Rebecca, I assume the lathe is in good working condition. If so, your starting price is very low. This doesn't matter provided you are prepaired to field a lot of low-ball offers until a more reasonable price is forthcoming. Though aged, this is a good machine and if in good working condition would be worth triple what you are asking.

Default Serious offers of negotiation only

Thank you gentlemen, I’m happy to up the price, 😁 we had no real idea of full value, and given we can’t test it, it seemed easier to start low.

$400 is the starting price. Starting low is a good move. As long as there is more than one person interested.
Is this an auction then? Or selling by Tender?
If this is OK by forum rules Rebecca then you will need a time deadline more accurate than Two weeks.
An exact cut off time is needed.

Hi, thank you, I must admit I hadn’t given the auction/tender thing much thought and I’ve probably broken all the sales moves here I simply just would like someone with interest to offer a reasonable price. Not looking at ripping people off or of being taken advantage of, just want to have something my Dad valued go to someone who will value it as well.

Clearly you're out of your depth with the shed stuff so in other forums here post the pics and ask people what they think it's worth.

Then you can load it on market place and gumtree at a bit higher price and see what happens. If it doesn't get a bite in a week drop the price by 10% every week or so. Eventually you will find the price point.

Just a sellers tip. If you post something on any site and you get a lot of interest and offers to buy site unseen... Pull the ad and relist at at least 25% higher. You've way under valued it and theres a lot of vultures that troll the market sites looking for deals, especially from deceased estates, to onsell.

Rebecca, that is an old lathe, but an extremely good lathe. With a bit of a clean up and checking of the electricals, belts and such, that lathe will last decades.

It comes complete with the factory stand and is the very desirable long bed version, meaning the overall width allows one to turn poles, posts and other such longer stuff.

Plus there is a chuck hanging off the drive end, this is an extra. Left side of the machine at the top and looks like this.

If you can find the serial number, look up Vicmarc, they are in Brisbane, call them and they should be able to give you an idea of when it was made, or possibly exactly when it was made.

From my research this is a mechanical variable speed lathe similar in concept to a Reeves pulley system. For those that are interested you should check how the pulley system is working as they apparently had issues with gear changing, thus wear and tear concerns. This is very different from today's electronic (VFD) lathes Vicmarc is noted for.

    Hi Rebecca,

This lathe is worth well into the high $2k region, or more as is, given long bed lathes are no longer commonly available and the near equivalent VL200 long bed stand mount lathes retail at $6.5k. CWS Store - Vicmarc V00753-1AU VL200 SM EVS Long Bed Lathe

Purchasers can easily convert to EVS using a standard & genuine Vicmarc retrofit kit - EVS Retrofit Assembly's | Vicmarc

Also check the Marketplace rules regarding sales - especially "auctions." See rule 3 at BASIC Market Place rules PLEASE READ Email the admin team for advice / permission on how best to proceed.

    Cheers

Just to add to mobyturns reply and no disrespect intended , the EVS retro fit you mentioned is $1500 plus GST add electrical costs and theirs no bargain to be had especially when you're quoting figures of $2500 on the lathe only option. I personally think this would not be a straight forward purchase and it would need to be considered carefully regardless of it being a Vicmarc lathe.

I suspect you have been slightly "caught out" by a combination of our Marketplace rules (see Mobyturns post #12 and his link, which prohibits auctions), your newness to the Forum (pictures can't be posted initially until a certain number of posts have occurred, although this can be overridden by the moderators in some cases) and your lack of knowledge on the product itself.

The Spin Doctor's suggestion in post #9 may help. Start a new thread in the Wood Turning forum to develop knowledge and then start a new thread in the Market Place at a later date. This current thread can be cancelled or the lathe "Withdrawn" temporarily.

There would not be many people prepared to buy without seeing some pix so that is your greatest stumbling block for the moment. This is true whether you decide to follow this path or seek another avenue to sell. I am not much of a woodturner even on my good days so I can't offer more advise other than good luck. it is good to hear phrase "wanting it to go to a good home:" I guess not everything is just about the money.

None taken, all opinions are of value. The new price quoted above was for a VL200, a new short bed VL240 (with swivel head) is closer in specs and is $7.4 to $7.8k so $4k ish all up is still a reasonable figure.
