Thread: Some other setting-out tools

I was plagued by a chronic shoulder injury for most of this year, & only able to do light work in my shed, so I filled in some time making a few batches of 'little' tools & things.

So here are some stocking-stuffers for you to consider.

First, some dovetail markers:
After making & using various styles of dovetail templates, this is the one I find most handy for general cabinet work. It combines the two most commonly used tail angles (9:1 & 6:1). The stocks are about 19mm square and 75mm long, with inlaid brass wear-strips. The blades extend 36mm each side of the stock, plenty enough for the vast majority of dovetails you are likely to set out. The blade is about the width of a typical drawer tail, & a handy reference when laying out tails.

Marking Knives
Derek Cohen gave me a knife similar to these many years ago, & it quickly became my favourite marking knife for routine setting-out. The woods are all hard, fine-grained species that take a very tactile finish. The thick end is ~15mm diameter for a comfortable ‘pencil’ grip. The blades are cut from an old circular saw blade, which is tough, but not as hard or brittle as high speed steel (and easier to re-sharpen!).
