Thread: Turner Hand Planes

Keep an eye out for a Titan plane blade, these are HSS tipped and would be a correct period replacement for the missing Turner blade in the number 4. They crop up on Ebay a few times a year, this last twelve months I’ve picked up 4 or 5. I can only recall ever seeing one Turner blade for sale so it might take a long time to find one.

Titan produced the HSS blades to cope with Aussie hardwoods and also for use with the newly invented laminate products just creeping into the market in the 50’s so it wasn’t unheard of for cabinet makers to purchase a new plane and fit a Titan blade to it from the start. Stanley bought Titan out and rebadged the blades under their own name for a while but I’m pretty sure Turner planes were no longer in production by then.

The Turner history is quite interesting, started by a young bloke on his own in 1935, he took over the Pope/Falcon portfolio and ended up with over 1100 employees when it was sold in 1970, hell of an accomplishment!

There is a good chance that the Stanley blade in the #4 is original.
Stanley purchased Turner and the they used up the remaining Turner stock before the all Stanley versions arrived on the market.
So the late Turner and early Australian Stanleys are can be found with a mix of Turner and Stanley parts.

The Turners came with ‘Turner’ branded Eric Anton Berg irons.
Also die cast frogs( which bent if too much force was put on them by the lever cap).
I couldn’t sell one here last year for $40 so you did well.
