Default Selling timber

I just did a quick analysis of my sales of Paulownia so far this financial year. There are 5 commercial sales that go over $1,000.00. The rest average $190.00 so pitching your bundles at $160.00 is just meeting the market for retail sales to 'home' woodworkers.

The regular price for rosewood/pacific mahogany is $2600 per cubic metre.at this rate,my price works out at $1600 per cubic metre.

There is also a vast difference between Paulownia and Rosewood-like comparing a Rolls-Royce and a second hand Barina.

I find it odd,to have so much difficulty in selling a high quality rainforest timber at a fair and reasonable price.Times must be tuff!

They even know what a Cubic metre is! I find it most odd that many woodworkers here have no idea on what a cubic metre is

Actually found the pics a few minutes after posting that...

A cubic is the length of the Pharaoh's forearm, isn't it

Well at least the price is right.

I find it somewhat ungracious of you to criticise a forum and its' members considering it doesn't cost you anything.

But it is a free world and you can always take your "business" elsewhere.

If you have a look at the number of items sold in the Market Place perhaps the problem may not be with the forum?

So your timber is like a second hand Barina. No wonder there is not much interest.

I think a major problem is pickup only in Queensland. Now if you were to arrange freight etc to the more populous states there might be more interest. Most here buy their special timber at the WWW Shows where delivery is already factored in.

I was not criticising your timber or the price. I was in fact supporting your move to smaller quantities as most of my sales are in small quantities. - Average $190.00. The price I get for retail quantities is $2,420.00 per cubic metre so it is not cheap timber.

I agree with Sturdee the biggest impairment to your sales is the pick up only factor. I use IPEC to transport my timber and have made sales to customers as far away as Exmouth WA, King Island in Bass Straight, Cairns and Darwin. I also allow my customers to select the size timber they want.

I agree there is a vast difference between Paulownia and Rosewood but that does not mean that Paulownia is a second grade timber. All timber has strengths and weakness's for certain purposes. You wouldn't build a surfboard out of Rosewood and you wouldn't build a kitchen table top out of Paulownia. I only sell my timber to customers when I know it it is a suitable timber for their purpose.

Hot

I've stumbled upon this having missed your previous post

some comments if I may
from your photos I can see that the timber has been well stickered and that the boards are a reasonable size

However, I can't see what the faces of the boards look like. Therefore I'm very reluctant to commit "sight unseen" so to say.
and then there's the transport issue.
As an example: I might be interested in buying enough timber for a small wall cabinet but if I have to arrange my own transport then I'll almost certainly settle for a less impressive (maybe even inferior) timber that I can source in Sydney.

There's a number of web sites in the US that sell less than truck load quantities of furniture grade timber. In each case there's pictures of the board faces, an opportunity to discuss (by mail or email) your needs with the vendor, and the vendor will arrange transport.

I can't stress enough the importance of transport -- to a potential customer like me and anyone else who doesn't rely on found wood.

Even if all I need is enough wood for a small box I usually need to have it cut into lengths short enough to fit in the boot of my car or pay for transport.

If you could guarantee a quality 3m board delivered to my door you would be on my list of possible suppliers

Please consider

You should check out Smartsend, they do a good deal in freight from Qld
Like many other who make smaller things single boards are attractive but we are too far away for a pickup

Whitewood
and for other timber suppliers reading this thread

I don't know how many forum participants are subscribers to Popular Wiodworking -- either on line or in hard copy.
the upcoming April 2012 issue contains this wall cabinet as a project
April 2012 #196 | PopularWoodworking.com

should I or a like minded person want to build one, Pacific Maghony would have to be on the list of possible woods
BUT
I'm not going to drive from Sydney to 2 hours NW of Brisbane to get it.
offer to bundle it up and ship it to me and now we're talking
Cost wise, if I lived in Western Sydney a trip to Greg Ward's car port would cost me upwards of $35 to $40 just in fuel and tolls.

A smart marketer, might even offer "cabinet packs" where the wood needed for the project was rough dimensioned to that required, thus attracting those who don't have access to the machines needed to turn a 50mm thick board into 25mm planks ready for final dimensioning.

think about it.
Many here are limited to what pre-dimensioned wood they can buy at their local Bunnings
There has to be a market for upmarket wood that is ready for final dimensioning

Default Big Thank You

BIG BIG THANK YOU to hotspur.

I took a drive today to pickup some of his Pacific Mahogany...Boy what a bargain.

Purchased .4 cube and got way more than I thought. Thanks again hotspur. If any is ever offered again, I'll be up there in a flash.

Here are some pics of the load...all straight and dry. When I saw the batch on the ground I started to wonder if my van would cope, but it took it in it's stride.
