Figured Cedar Panels - 100+ years old
I’ve had these for years but I’m not doing any work in cedar these days so best they get passed on to someone who will use them. They were removed from a c1880 Victorian Australian cedar wardrobe. Beautiful book matched figure. The front face has been sanded many years ago to remove the old finish but the back is still original. Size is 395w x 1190 long x 6mm thick. There is some slight cupping across the width but this is original as they were removed and should pull out to some degree when fixed in place. There is an end grain split on the top of one and the bottom of the other as shown in the photos. With a freshen up and repolish they would be superb in the right piece or for box making. I really don’t know what these are worth. How about $70 the pair?

Very pretty bits of wood. It's good to see these old pieces of furniture being recycled.
Cheers

I can't say what others would be prepared to pay as everyone's tastes and needs are different, but I come across these sorts of recycled boards quite a bit (as I'm a scrounger!) and I usually get them for bugger all.
Based on my experience with identical types of boards I invariably find due to the age they often need a little extra care as the timber can crack somewhat easy depending on how it's being machined/planed, etc, and any existing cracks can really open up.
If I had a project in mind for them specifically and had to pay, to me personally as I need to obtain timber as cheap as possible to make projects economical, they wouldn't be worth more than around $20-$30 the pair, maybe.
This is just my 2c though and my wife and kids are always telling me i'm wrong so take this with a grain of salt. ;-)
cheers, Ian

Hmmmm....I respect some may be in a position to take advantage of giveaway timber when it pops up but i'd suggest it might be a while before drinks finding cedar panels like this for $10 each. As for cracks, I used dozens of these panels and other recycled timber during my cedar phase many years ago and never found one of them moved after milling. It's been seasoning for 130 years so I'd suggest most of the movement is already taken care of other than that dictated by the seasons. Regardless, it is what it is. Lovely timber that I hope someone can put back to use in the form of feature panels which is what they were originally hand planed for over a century ago. How about $50 the pair.

By the way I should also say the colour of the cedar in the photos is for some reason quite misleading. These are the lovely warm dark cedar colour you expect from old growth cedar of good density. Thanks again.

Yeah, a'right, seems I might have another project I didn't know I had.
I'll take 'em!
I'll get a PM of shortly.
Cheers
