| |  Hollow Vessel w/Finial
Kinda jumped on this finial thing lately, but didn't want to seem like I was headed in the same direction as Cindy Drozda, so I sat down and drew out a plan, between drinks, on a paper napkin for a different kind of topper.
What I came up with is the finial portion to be turned and then carved to reveal a lean single spire growing from three stylized supports.
So, here it is...flame birch body120mm diameter x 80 mm high. The cocobolo lid/finial is 70mm high and the spire itself is 1mm thick.
Lots of fun making this piece.

Ed you blokes keep doing this stuff that is out of my capabilities (as Clint Eastwood said a man's got to know his limitations)
Looks great but now you have to do it again for the WIP
Please tell is the lid/finial one peice or 2.

Thanks for the comments, guys.
David...the lid has a 1/4" (6mm?) diameter mortise drilled to 1/8" (3mm?) deep. The finial has a matching tenon to fit.
Was just eyeing the blackwood blank the other day...think I'm gonna' start on it sometime next week.

The finial for my piece was turned then laid out at 120 degree segments...marked those reference lines. Then using a 3/32nd carbide tip cutter in the Dremel tool, the wood was rough wasted between the lines. Once the main space was done, I switched to using the Turbo Carver for final cutting the wings. Then it was a lot of sanding all the way down to 12000 (yes, 12000) a couple of coats of Waterlox, then dark Brie Wax in order to tone down the bright Cocobolo colors
