Default Jacaranda box with ancient Kanooka finial

I did a web search but wasn't able to find anything about ancient kanooka. KenW gave it to me - thanks Ken!

    Now for the box.

You are going to ask "why?" you are going to say "don't add anything unless it is needed for the design."

I'm going to say "met George Jetson" because that song has been going through my head all day and it's driving me crazy! It's bad enough when you get a good song stuck in your head, why do I have that?

So, this is one of the buildings from the Jetsons I think that is enough explaination to cover the "why?"!

It seems to be my 10 box for the challenge, and it's only the second one where I can say that nothing went wrong! (other then the sun coming out at the wrong time and making me stop)

A bit off topic, but the Jetson's theme is a classic "ear worm" (that song that won't go away).
The only way out of it is to sing the theme from Neighbours......and that's so bad that all ear worms go away.

    Back on topic.......Nice Box.

Watson - now I'm thinking "What would a "neighbours" box look like?"

I think I can say that the next box will be your fault.

Eliza, you turned this box just what was coming right out of your head ?
Well it looks fine, smooth and crispy, a very fine delicate finial.
Good combination of two woodspieces. My only remark, I would have make the box a bit heigher, but that's just me.
Going fishing today with my two grandsons, they have still vacation.
    Have a nice day.
    Cheers, Ad

Oh, I ment to talk about the woods.

Jacaranda - very forgiving, easiest end grain I've had to deal with so far, even better then the camphor laurel, although maybe I just got an easy piece.

The ancient kanooka is amazing. It doesn't snap, it flexes. Which is good, because I had major shakes this afternoon! I think that if I wasn't shaking I could have got it finer, I'll try it one morning instead of waiting until afternoon to turn it.

And I'm going to buy the miniature tools off Gary Pye after all. I need smaller, and a detail gouge. I like his prices, and best of all, they come in a box!

    (box, get it? doh)

back to the a. kanooka. It also sands really REALLY well, and shines up almost like ebony, only not quite as black. Dark brown/black.

And excellent wood for finials, but I think too flexible for hair sticks.

    Nice one

That ancient kanooka looks pretty special to me. Why do you say too flexible for hair sticks?

Nice box Eliza - I like the large lid/small box upside down thing. Good fun

Eliza, Nice crisp detail in the finial. I also think it is a bit long for the box. But it's your design.
I told you Ancient Kanooka was nice to turn.
Kanooka (kanuka, box) Tristaniopsis exiliflora / Tristaniopsis laurina.
Tristaniopsis is a member of the Myrtaceae family the same as Eucalyptus.
Kanooka is normaly red and turns black after it has been buried for a few million years.
