Drat. Sorry, but the trip has been cancelled. There will be another opportunity later in the year (this one can't be cancelled).

    Attachment 94529 Attachment 94530
I have been talking with Amos and to give him a hand with this I am going to look after pens for Naval personnel on deployment. The ships do change up there so the pens will get distributed as they come in and to what ever ship is away on deployment.

If anyone wants to send pens to these people please PM me and I will send my address.

The first parcel is hopefully away in a couple of weeks.

My son has been in contact with the Captain of HMAS Warramunga Attachment 94528 and below is a copy of his last email. I have removed some names and links for obvious reasons

It would be with great pleasure that I accept this incredibly generous offer from your father and his friends and I can assure you they would be presented to suitably worthy recipients. We now have a Ship's Warrant Officers and mine is WO AWASM who is ccd. If you could forward them to him he will be the point of contact.

Now understanding what it is I have to say this is a great initiative and one which we will make sure follow up on who receives them and for what will be sent.

    Thanks for the support

Trust the Navy to muck things up! Allocating stuff to people who deserve it? Guys do it right get the officers (what the Army calls REMF's) to cook the barby do a lucky dip draw whatever somebody gets a pen and everyone goes lucky so and so good on you mate.

Were those divers fishing the mines out of that mucky harbour Navy? If so they deserve all the Navy pens until Moses sails the Arc back down to the harbour.

Amos I have my first batch off to you today. 9 Pens in all. 5 Grey Gum and 4 are from a wavy bit of what I think is River Red Gum, no way to be sure. I did a trial for a job at a Pizza shop they didn't hire me but let me take home a bit of wood with me! *LOL* They do have nice fiddleback grain in them so that is nice.

I have put tags on the pens with species. It would be beaut to put in a message to say good on you for your sacrifice, come home safe and we are very proud of all our men and women in uniform, just that I can't write that small.

I was reading the book, "18 Hours" about the SAS signaller from 152 Squadron Martin "Jock" Wallace. It mentions the love and affection that the US troops had lavished on them. Lollies letters and the like.

"It was significant. And it kept your focus and kept your mind on the job. You also knew the Australian population would be backing you.

I just wanted to say don't let yourself feel like you are doing a lot for no reward and making a few pens doesn't matter. That sort of giving can leave you feeling all hollowed out but I am sure it means an awful lot to our guys in uniform. It was a pretty big deal when we got that plaque from the SASR. The 4RAR is there also and I think 3RAR as well. There are others that get little attention in the media. I think it is a pretty sure bet that RAEME has people there for instance. A whole lot of people that really value the effort we put in for them.

So put in what you can. I am sure that come ANZAC day a few gifts from home will put some really big smiles on peoples faces.

Not all of those are my pens Amos. Just the rough beginner pens.

When you said lest we forget it just made me think about how that phrase gets sprayed around on Anzac Day in the Media. They use it like punctuation. It strikes me lest we forget merely is a way of saying, so we remember, or to make sure we don't forget. The refrain was read traditionally and the audience answered at its end by saying, "we will remember them". In many places "lest we forget" is used as the last line and then that is repeated.

Thought you all might be interested.

    no worries Amos

Did anyone notice the fires in Victoria? OK you noticed that but did you notice that on sunday the PM said the Commonwealth would help and that included the ADF. Monday morning when most of us were getting up there were 300 from the RAE there with machines and chainsaws to help the CFA. I think that number is double now, but the effort just to get 300 ready to go let alone there on the job is huge.

The plan is that tomorrow RAE will have made 100km of firebreak which is significant. The men in bulldozers are working in open machines. The unit has Armoured Personnel Carriers there. If things get too tight they will use the APC's evacuate drivers from the Bulldozers.

I notice also that every night on channel nine while they are haven't talked about the Army's effort the oval there is covered in Khaki tents that I am sure are Army issue. What's more they are straight and square. They look like Army tents to me. So I am pretty sure that people there think they have got a lot of really good help from the Army.

    Default Pens for the Navy

These are the pens that will ship out this week the HMAS Warramunga the current ship that is in the Gulf on detachment.

A big thank you to Graham (Sundowner), David ( Pasho) and MR Anonymous for all the pens and donations of kits. I am sure the men and women of the vessel will be impressed.

I have written short letter with every pen to identify the material and how they operate.

They should have the pens by Anzac Day as they are going in a ships official bag from Canberra. Thank you Aaron (Son of Sam) for organizing with the ships Captain and the donation of the velvet sleeves that the pens will go in.

I did manage to get two decals set on two of the pens, this is my first attempt at decal work and I think after a few problems I have sorted it out. I have badges and crests for the army and the airforce as well for next time
