Default Bailey classic yacht Uira - Desperately needs a new home

    Hi all

A friend of mine brought to my attention the threat facing a very historic New Zealand built yacht at the moment. The yacht Uira dating from 1896 is on hardstand in need of removal at Sydney and is apparently being offered free to a willing taker. The link to the advertisement follows plus the record for Uira from my Register of Australian and New Zealand Ships and Boats.

Please spread the word, particularly to those in New Zealand. It would be a shame if she was to be broken up.

    Best regards

    Mori

Default Uira will return to Melbourne

    Hi Mori,

I can report that Uira is in the process of moving back to Melbourne. Word went out from the Classic Yacht Assiociation and I heard about her. Myself and a couple of other wooden boat enthusiasts travelled to Noakes boatyard and checked her out. We sealed her up refloated her and towed her to Woolwich Marina where she could be lifted out onto a truck. She stayed in a pen for a couple of weeks until a truck became available. She is now sitting in a truck yard in Sydney reading for the trip. I do not have much of a plan at this stage apart from getting her back to my factory safe and sound. Her hull is in reasonable condition apart from some rot in her stern and a few worm strikes up front. The deck is rotted out and requires replacement but was not original anyway. It would be nice to return her to original as a flush decked, gaff cutter. I just have to work out how to fund it.

I learned a bit about her history and signifacance to Port Philip bay from your blog. Thank you.

    Regards

    Peter
