I would have put the spring above the plate so to provide tension as the belt stretches, I may be wrong

I'd need something below it though otherwise all the weight would be on the belt. Two shorter springs with one below and one above might work better, might take a trip to Bunnings later and see what I can find.

I think two threaded handles, one above and one below the tensioner is the best way to do these.

That was actually another one of my early ideas, was just thinking of gluing a nut into a small knob made out of timber.

I'm actually just backing off the tension while it's unused at the moment, need to get some blades anyway.

And here's where I'm at with the Vicmarc! Picked up a locking collar cheap off ebay, amazed they're not standard on most lathes considering how cheap and useful they are.

Didn't get a chance to put paint down on the banjo, too busy finishing up the Woodfast this weekend. One more week of work and then I have a 5 day weekend booked, want to try and get all the paint done during that period hopefully.

More progress on the VL200. Spent the evenings this week getting the banjo painted and got the headstock stripped back this morning. Hoping to get 3 coats down on that today if everything goes to plan.

I'm very much sold on Hammerite paint now, it's so nice not having to worry about priming and it goes on with a brush really nicely. Seems to go a lot further than spray cans too, I've barely made a dent in the 750ml tin I bought.

More pics to come, I'm going to spend some time on the polishing machine later while I wait for paint to dry.

I never use WD 40, I use "PB Blaster". I find it to be much, much better!

Well I'm a happy camper. I've been scoping out dust collectors on Gumtree the last couple of months and just picked up a 3HP twin bag Carbatec unit for a song. Will get to work swapping out the intake ports for 6" ones but otherwise it works great.

Have most of the Vicmarc finished as well except for the bed and legs, just need to fit the bearings in the headstock and I'll put up some pics.

Vicmarc is getting dropped off at Fiora Machinery tomorrow for a bearing swap, still need to paint the legs and bed but stupid weather on weekends has sucked lately. Getting closer though!

Also got a package in from Axminster, originally wanted just the honing guide set but the prices were so good on the other stuff I figured I'd put in a bigger order. Worked out well too, adding the two saws and 8" saw guide only added £1 to the shipping. Ridiculously fast shipping too, I paid Monday and it arrived today. Looking forward to putting them all to work [emoji3]

Bearing replacement on the Vicmarc headstock is finished! Going to pick it up later on today after a dentist's appointment. Only cost $160 which I am very happy with, took a few weeks but the guys at Fiora told me well ahead of time that they had a huge backlog.

Means I need to get my bum into gear and finish the bed and stand, been distracted with hand tools lately 😁

    More to come soon!

Okay have started work on the lathe bed and stand, taking a break so here's some progress.

The grinder with a stripping disk made short work of the top of the bed but it's going to be a pain getting into all the other spots, too narrow for even a small grinder. Luckily most of the rust was on top so I can probably just hit problem areas with paint stripper to get back to bare metal. More pics to come soon, I'm really hoping I can get this stripped at home this week and then I'll transport it up to Dad's for painting over the weekend.

Still can't decide what to paint them, I feel like if I paint them both hammered blue it will look very gaudy once assembled. Actually tempted to just paint them grey or charcoal.

You probably know that the top of the rails (ways) don't get painted just give them a thorough dose of WD40 to keep the rust at bay

I'd paint every other bit of the rails Hammertone Blue and the legs etc darkish grey
try google and look through the images for a better idea

Not a bad idea, I'll look through Google images and see what turns up!
